Re: Buying A Better Goban - Help Me Decide?

Absolutely, thank you for the suggestion. All my pictures
on this page (page 2) of the thread are now hidden.

Hey deepgreen, can you hide those photos? Interested parties could still un-hide them, and it'd be easier on those of us that are reading the dialogue in this thread. Just a suggestion ...

Re:

You are correct, as Tchan mentioned the lacquered grid lines are slightly 3d. If you
look at the picture below, it's the same "2 stones" ... you see how tilted they
look in the first picture. All I did was move them slightly off the grid lines,
and they straightened out. If I were to move them even ...

Re: Buying A Better Goban - Help Me Decide?

tchan001 - Yes, it's the lines (not the stones). The first & second pictures below show
the same two stones, just slightly repositioned. The lacquered lines (and hoshi) are slightly
raised (which I was happy to read, is a good thing). If I move the stones completely off the
lines, they're even more ...

Re: Buying A Better Goban - Help Me Decide?

My shipment arrived from Kurokigoishi (KGT)
in Japan. Here's some of my first
pics of my new Hon-Kaya 2.1 Sun (6.3cm)
board & Size 38 (10.7mm) std grade clam
shell go stones...

They packed it very well. Solid
HonKaya wood - sure is heavy.

In addition to the picture below, here's
a couple more you ...

Re: Floor Goban help choice

Congrats on your decision to get a new board & stones. Here's
a few ideas for you:

Yunzi stones have a great history to them. You can read
about it here:
m

An alternative to Yunzi you might consider would be glass.
Yutopian has both Korean and Japanese Glass stones, with
Korean being 1/2 the price ...

Re: Buying A Better Goban - Help Me Decide?

A big "Thank You" to everyone, for your suggestions and input! They
were much appreciated.

Made my decision, and my order's on the way.

Here's what I decided to do:

a) I resisted the urge to go with a floor goban - I liked the
idea - but - pretty sure my "back" will thank me.

b) I opted to go ...

Re: Yunzi Stones With Kaya Board - bad idea?

Well said!

I like nice things too, but it seems to me that scratches and dents are a natural consequence of the energetic struggles fought on our 19x19 battlefields. If you want to keep your board and/or stones pristine, then box them up and put them in a safe place where nothing can happen to ...

Re: Yunzi Stones With Kaya Board - bad idea?

Thank you David, appreciate that. That eases my concerns.
And I may just keep an eye out for a deal on shells &
slate over at KGT.

Re: Yunzi Stones With Kaya Board - bad idea?

Ooops. Quite right. My mistake. My Yunzi's are
Size 33 double convex 9.2mm tall and 21mm wide/diam.

I think maybe we're getting our wires crossed with thickness and diameter. 9.2 mm sounds like the thickness of your stones. Yunzi come in several sizes. Yours are quite likely close enough to the ...

Re: Yunzi Stones With Kaya Board - bad idea?

Point taken. I asked because I already own
a set of Yunzi that I really like and was
hoping to keep using 'em when I get a Kaya board...
but then started to wonder if they might be
too hard.

Where are the best places to get a good
deal on quality shell & slate?

And, what's the most recommended ...

Re: Buying A Better Goban - Help Me Decide?

Sure appreciate everyone's input. What a great forum.
Thanks guys.

tchan001, a big thank you for pointing me to the Hon-Kaya section
of KGT's site. Somehow, I missed that when I was looking there.
And the board you suggested ... wow, very nice!

Re:

Yes, but only with a hard board (like bamboo). Not
with Shin-Kaya. I'm not excessively rough with stones ... but
wasn't sure if Yunzi stones are a bad idea, and would quickly scratch
and dent Hon-Kaya - and/or how careful one would need
to be.

Have you had any experience with "lesser" boards with ...
