Re: End of game under AGA rules vs .sgf files

I've just seen a post in which someone says he has had 8 disputes in 1000 games. That's about 8 times more than I've had in 50 years with Japanese rules, and I was a beginner once.

Yes, and your point? My games are all documented and online for your perusal. I have demonstrated that even with "a ...

Re: End of game under AGA rules vs .sgf files

But, after gaining a little skill, its probably not necessary to insist on using them [AGA/area rules]. So, maybe you're right afterall.

In a tournament setting for amateurs with a wide range of skill, I consider them necessary (when compared to the alternative). Even with "a little skill ...

Re: unprofessional behavior from KGS admins during/after jub

Is being an admin really that hard? If I were an admin, I'd just have KGS minimized and only do something if someone messages me. That way I only have to take action if it's serious enough that someone wants me to intervene, otherwise it's probably not worth it. I know a lot of people who would ...

Re: sill no sound - ubuntu12.04 - icedtead/java6/7

I'm not sure a modified client is a copyright infringement: the distributed binary is no longer the same as original (it's derivative work.)

Unless sites hosting the KGS software have permission, it's a copyright violation. It doesn't matter if it is modified or not. I couldn't take Microsoft ...

At our regular Go meetings at the coffee shop, when complete novice-strangers ask about the game,
sometimes they ask the same thing as you -- one of the most common questions --
"When does the game end?" If I say, "The game reaches a point where both players agree it is over"
it may sound very ...

Re: Is KGS developement dead or just slow?

Oh... I see what you are saying...
KGS was running fine for the past X years when WMS was doing just routine maintenance, and you were happy with that. And now that he stopped maintaining it - you just want to go back to the 'cruising' years, right?

I wouldn't say I was happy with just the ...

Re: Is KGS developement dead or just slow?

Ok, fine, 5 years. So?

So you were wrong. There has not been a diligent effort for many years, but it cruised along. So all it takes to get back to that model is to have one or a few volunteers able to maintain the code, and it doesn't need a big commitment.

My point is as follows:

Your ...

Re: Is KGS developement dead or just slow?

2. Bill has an actual job. The job market in IT in the US now is difficult. If Bill were to quit paid employment in order to work on KGS for free, it's a financial sacrifice for him and there's certainly no guaranntee that he'd get a job equivalent to the one he has now. Why would he do this ...

Re: Is KGS developement dead or just slow?

About the only area where significant effort has been put into has been the Android client, and that's a paid app. So there hasn't been any work done except for the work that's been done? I guess that's true...

What I said is true. I said significant effort, to correspond with Bantari's "diligent ...

Re: Is KGS developement dead or just slow?

As part of the above - it has been diligently worked on and maintained over the years (present hiatus notwithstanding)

Let's get real here. Serious development beyond tinkering stopped many, many years ago. Saying it has been "diligently" worked on in even the last 5 years is a joke. About the ...

Re: Is KGS developement dead or just slow?

I understand there are a lot of programmers out there who would like to look at the code, tinker a little, and never look at it again - but I don't think KGS (or any server) could survive such model. As far as I know, there is no successful server out there based on such approach. The old NNGS was ...

Re: Discussion culture

I have already sifted through a few DoP examples and what I found made me start. It turns out to be a rather more complex topic than I imagined, and correspondingly fascinating, with many implications for theory. So I look forward to a PROPER discussion even more than usual as my "reward" for the ...

Re: Honte - a primer

Nobody has mentioned it in this thread, but I like "honest". I see it's been mini-debated on the Sensei's page for honte and that it wasn't popular, but it works for me to capture the sense of seemingly slack but proper. It's also a good mnemonic because the words look similar.
