Having super strong go-engines has definitely changed how the game is played at top level. But how?
I watched a youtube video on subject and from there I got understanding that some basic josekins like san-san invasion are perhaps not the best options. Keeping sente is more valuable than previously ...

Re: 10,000 hours revisited
I think this also somewhat relates to the recent death of an intern at a bank because of working excessive hours doing work that wasn't even essential. In my opinion "busy work" doesn't count, though some are attracted to mindless inefficient repetitive behaviors, because they can't know that ...

Re: Age & Improvement
That's my point as well. We have no theory of the brain sufficient to say "yes, you need to start as a young child to really excel". We've got no way to control people's lives enough to test this idea. We've got no good statistical way of approaching the question, because the confounding factors ...

Re: Getting over your wall.
For me I have on occasion debated, is it my weaknesses too weak or my strengths not strong enough. It makes a difference.
The former. You can get to 1d without any particular strength or tesuji cleverness.
No offense meant. The first step is eliminating/reducing mistakes.
And 1d is still not ...

Re: Tygem/WBaduk rank comparison
I think that in addition to sandbagging it seems that rank worse than say 6k are meaningless. I have two accounts and games I play on my 6k account are not really different from those in my 13k account.
I hope you don't have anything against sandbaggers, because there might be one in your room ...

Re: Tygem/WBaduk rank comparison
What is a mid-high kyu? High usually means stronger, but lower numbered kyus are stronger than higher numbered kyus. Also, mid- means middle, but what are the end points? 1 kyu is one end. Is 30 kyu the other one? I suppose that mid-high kyu could be 10-15k or 15-20k in that case.

Re: Raising money to 'Open-Source' kaya.gs
Respectfully, you can have the perfect server in terms of coding, but if nobody uses it then it is useless, hence Magicwand's question.
Ah, I see - thanks.
There was a lot of hype around kaya - and I think for a reason: people were looking for a modern UI, features like Fisher timing, voice ...

Re: wbaduk on wine redux
I got it to work - thanks Amnal!
I got it to work but few issues so far:
Annoying "lets have fantastic game" gizmo was in anointing place and hard to move as it has no title bar. I modified it place and size in source and now it better
Second was that in two games stone was not placed on board ...

Re: Rating system
I have ended up with a preference for simple system over a mathematically intricate system for playing on. There are huge amounts of factors (such as creating new accounts, deliberately sandbagging etc) that make for a far bigger impact than the intricate maths of theoretically "superior" systems ...

Re: wbaduk on wine redux
I haven't tried playing any games yet but from my observation it seemed that on all servers (I tested wbaduk and tygem) komi always shows at 0.5. Also I noticed that in the byo-yomi countdown there is a zero second count before going into the next period.
komi is 6.5 in wbaduk if opponent is of ...

Probably they have nothig against undo in principle. Just did not get implemented. Yes, pre-thingy is stupid

Re: undo ?
I'm not really sure what this sentence means, but it sounds like you are saying that not being able to put the stone where you want is part of the game, which it is NOT.
I don't know... I have certainly lost games in tournaments because I placed a stone an intersection away from where I meant to ...

Re: wbaduk on wine redux
You could try qgo2 which was able to log on to wbaduk before. I haven't tried it in a while.

Thx, this works. Just have know that wbaduk is oro in the list.
And it is this specific version one has to use. There seems to be 3 qgo's around and one from Ubuntu repo's will not work.
