Re: Fujisawa Kazunari question

Telephone often adds to the problem. Many sound wave length which are used in speech are obviously not transmitted. My name has a “p“ in it but on the phone it is allways misunderstood as a “t“. Don't bother to correct any more ...

Re: Go Nation: Chinese Masculinities and the Game of Weiqi i

I read the book sometime ago and liked it alot. It won't tell u anything new about Go itself, but for any Western Go player who is interested in Chinese society and the Chinese Go community it's well worth reading. The author is an expert with professorship and all but the book is not too academic ...

I don't know anything to answer the question - but the book looks rather interesting. :-)

Re: Playing other abstract board games?

Maybe the different skill gaps can be pinpointed by way of the game mechanics: Chess and go are both essentially "race games". Meaning the player who makes the most efficient moves wins. Meaning the player who makes less mistakes wins.

A normal game of go lasts about 100 moves longer than a game ...

Re: Nobody in my company interested in Weiqi

Hi Darkpolarbear!

Even the great (and late :-( ) Milton Bradley didn't manage to interest the members of the ever sooo smart Mensa Club for go:

(scroll down to the Mensa section on that page)

Maybe that's a bit of solace.

Re: Is it rude to play out a ~15 pts loss (at 5k)?

So it's as I feared: The problem is not solveable (within the limits of the game and for a person raised in Europe, that is). Being a beginner I'm not able to count correctly therefor I'm in constant danger of being rude by not resigning. On the other hand the stronger player also can't hint that I ...

Re: Is it rude to play out a ~15 pts loss (at 5k)?

Maybe there is a cultural issue involved too: In many games and sports in "the West" it counts as impolite, even rude to resign (just think of a football match: it would be unthinkable that a team which is behind 0:6 refuses to play to the end but just leaves the field). And even I - being a really ...

Re: Professional advice?

Hugely interesting comment, Daal. My story of life is abit similar. Therefor I'm very curious if I'll make similar experiences. At present my time as a go player compared to my time as an “artist“ is way to short.

Re: Professional advice?

Boidhere, as a beginner I have not the least clue what go is all about, but surely I guessed as much that it's not only visual. In fact that's preciesly why I tend to think that go is NOT the right hobby for me. I allways was hopeless in mathematics and languages and my measured IQ is in fact sub ...

Re: Professional advice?

The most interesting discussion I have read so far! Please don't stop!
Being really bad at go but good at drawing I might say that at drawing / sketching an alert state of not analysing is the right state of mind. There might be a connection with go because go is also a very visual thing. The right ...

Re: Professional advice?

Remarkable similarities to (other) martial arts. So probably there also is a culturell aspect involved, meaning the way one is trained / raised to think. I guess the way I as an European learned to think is just the opposite of "No Mind" (Locke, Descartes and Kant all would have been lousy go ...

Thank you for so many different yet interrelated views. Most helpfull!

And of course now I have the metaphor-thing right too: Life is a metaphor for go. ;-)
