Re: The Daily 123 Go Lessons are gone?

They have been made private, as have all videos by HW9x9. The channel was owned by the same people or guy that owned eurogotv.com, which shut down in June. At the same time all the videos on Hw9x9 were made private. The videos were great and it's a shame they have been made private, I have no idea ...

Re: Deliberate Practice

I'm not sure I agree with the whole forcing yourself to study idea. Go is a hobby after all. To each his own though.

Re: Got kicked from OGS because I accepted game offers

I think you ought to lay off the broccoli.

The OGS challenge / accept system puts me off playing there actually. If I want to play without handicap, then I don't really want to play somebody nowhere near my rank. Still miss it as the ultimate correspondence server

I also think the challenge ...

Re: Food for brain

Hi

The "learn to play go" series is very good, especially the first 2 books.

Also google igowin, it's a free 9x9 program where you play against the computer. It starts at the beginner level and get more difficult as you win. It's a good way of getting comfortable with the rules.

Re: Very beginner question

There are many moves you can play. The most simple one is just to play in the largest area, which is the bottom, on the star point or one below(which is more common because it is better for taking territory). You can also approach any of the corners, or the stone just played on the top side.

Re: Filling in the gaps

About the move I showed earlier, i don't think it's any good. First of all, the opponent can just let you live in the corner, which I think is rarely good for you since he breaks the side. Secondly, if he wants the corner he can just play the hane instead of pulling down, and it reverts to one of ...

Re: When a pro really tries

A random KGS 1d is about a random EGF 3k

Not really, unless that "EGF 3k" is a French sandbagger. I know EGF 1ds who are KGS 1d too. And I'm EGF 4d and KGS 3d at blitz (I don't have a solid ranked serious account any more, but would be 4d I suppose). Though I do agree Lee Sedol is more than 9 ...

Re: When a pro really tries

He doesn't sound like a strong amateur. 9 stones should level the random kgs 1 dan with Lee Sedol.

A random KGS 1d is about a random EGF 3k who can take about 9 stones from a random EGF 6d who can take a few stones from a random pro who can take a few stones from Yi Se-tol.

KGS is generally EGF ...

Re: Finding the balance between play and study

Playing is the most important part for improving imo, especially at your level. Also, players your level usually have basic shape trouble, so read shape up, it's a free book online. Studying basic joseki is also important, they teach you about shape.

Re: Updated strength of IGS ratings?

IGS is weaker in the dan level, it seems that the higher the dan, the bigger the difference between igs and kgs. Cornel for instance is 9 dan on igs but 6 dan on kgs, at least he was the last time I checked. I think a lot of people in the high dans play handicap games which results in more ...

Re: Filling in the gaps

You're right, I put the wrong order. Instead of Q18 white should immediately play S18. Now W has miai to cut of the 2 stones or live in the corner.

Not sure how to get the embedding to work but anyway like this: http://eidogo.com/#2kfrK74ln

Re: Filling in the gaps

Hi, I'm curious about a variation.

After black Q17 after the 3-3 invasion, how about wR16? I think it's possible, but rarely good. However if the side is strong W can take the corner like this later. If black just connects at q15 white will get the corner with s15. Feels like black must play s15 in ...
