Re: Too old to start?

I read an old post from here telling the story of a Japanese man who advanced from 1kyu to 5dan after hitting fifty, and it only took him several years.

I also remember reading somewhere about an amazing woman who learned how to play go at 50 and was a 3 dan by 70.

Re: What is a Beginner?

I can keep playing go until I am perfect too...

Or Roger Federer is a tennis beginner because he made an unforced error in the Wimbledon final? (If you want a non repeatable game situation).

World chess champ Kramnik missed a mate in one once, with 30 minutes still on the clock. Most chess ...

Re: What feelings do you get from various opening moves?

I like when someone picks a random spot far from the corners for an opening move and manages to create a winning strategy.

Re: Mainstream Go Sightings

Yesterday I myself was sighted :-)

An old, grey haired Asian man was standing next to me on the subway, and I could tell he was paying attention to the game of Go I was playing on my phone. He took a seat and produced his phone out of his pocket. Ten minutes later I looked down and noticed he was ...

Re: Anybody good at science?

The way I understand it, everything is made up of particles and at some point, if you break those particles down into smaller particles you reach a limit where no smaller particles exist. Am I wrong?

What I'm asking is why matter can not be shattered indefinitely.

Anybody good at science?

Let's say the tiniest, most elementary types of particles were discovered. Inside, they would be solid matter. What exactly would prevent us from cutting off a piece from the particle?

edit: more accurately, why couldn't these particles be broken down again and again indefinitely provided we had ...

become a dan player or die

Took me a couple of months and I've managed to read most of the material archived on this forum (all the sub-sections). I've noticed that most people here have a great sense of humour and a deep appreciation for the game!

As getting to dan level seems a recurring topic here, I thought I'd share my ...

Have you ever played chess with a woman?

It's a lot less popular among women, isn't it? I've been playing for twenty years and faced dozens of male opponents, but never a woman.

On a related note, how popular is Go among women compared to men?

Are there a lot of non-asian professionals these days? The only one I heard of is Alexander Dinerchtein.
