Re: Consistent Effort - SamT's Journal

So why is this variation uncommon in pro games?

Based on the followups at X and Triangle, it seems to completely negate the value of Black's thickness and turn him into dame, which, if true, means this is too good for white. Since white can pick this variation, it seems like this should be played ...

Re: Consistent Effort - SamT's Journal

Hey Ed, it's a midevil swordfghting game with bows, swords, shields, and armor. There are various "cultural" groups (meaning they are focused on some sort of skill, craft, or game) within Amtgard.

Re: Consistent Effort - SamT's Journal

For curiosity's sake, I have attached my monthly problem totals form Guo Juan's Internet Go School going back to my implosion in Dec 2014.

Looking at the chart got me curious about exactly how long I was playing and studying, so I went back and made a timeline for my own reference.

December 2013 ...

Consistent Effort - SamT's Journal

Hi all,

I'm back. Since I'm not really a "beginner" anymore, I thought I should close up shop on my Beginner's Journey and make a new journal.

I imploded spectacularly about 8 months after I started after becoming obsessed with my rank. Every loss was like a knife. I played worse and worse (man ...

Re: SamT's Study Journal - A Beginner's Journey

Training Update:

I have been training on InternetGoSchool most recently. Their leaderboard really has me competitive. I currently have a 13 day streak, and I got to 5th place for the week yesterday. I've dropped down today since I haven't done enough problems (it seems to be about 330 a day to keep ...

BTW, thank you very much for coming back and posting such detailed follow ups after your initial comments. It works out well for me because you usually end up doing a post about the opening ...

Re: SamT's Study Journal - A Beginner's Journey

Thanks again, Ed.

re: the cut at the beginning
Now that I see the game after a day away, I see how much of bad plan the cut is. I was doing problems regarding another joseki that uses the cut, and I saw a "familiar" shape, so I played it. But it was wrong here because I didn't have the other side ...

Re: SamT's Study Journal - A Beginner's Journey

Today's game, improved. Only losing by 9.5 instead of 25+. Gotta be getting a little better right? :) (I know that's not true).

Re: SamT's Study Journal - A Beginner's Journey

Hey Ed -

In regards to the situation after 36, I see that it is not good for me. After that I felt i was desperately trying to play catchup all game.

Moving on to the lower right:

Understanding that the result in the lower right is not good for me either is currently difficult for me, but I think ...

Re: SamT's Study Journal - A Beginner's Journey

Thank you Ed!

I am sorry I haven't responded yet, but I am still digesting all of this. This is great info.

When you had me cycle through the groups, my observations lined up with yours (except I did not know about the weaknesses in the knights move at the lower left (they were obvious once you ...

Re: SamT's Study Journal - A Beginner's Journey

I've been playing a little against Crazy Stone 2013 (which isn't very strong, I hear, but plenty strong to beat me).

I'm not sure what specifically I could do better, beyond magically becoming better at reading and shape. Kind of frustrated.

Here's a game.

Re: SamT's Study Journal - A Beginner's Journey

Simple when you say it, harder to do, right? ;) I will definitely memorize the priority rules. I've been looking for a sort of checklist to go through every turn, to build better habits, and it seems to be a good framework for a start.
