I have both the agathis and the single-piece shinkaya from GGG. I prefer the Agathis.

Re: Someone got a sweet deal on eBay

Knowing the winner of this auction (sadly not me), I can tell you this goban is going to a person who has waited years to find one like it and who can truly appreciate it.

They must nearly be marbles.

I cannot afford any of those prices but I would appreciate it if you could post a pic or two.

Re: Board with engraved lines in UK/EU? Hebsacker-Verlag.de?

Fortunately, a commercially manufactured goban could be easily "engraved" (read: cut) very precisely with minimal blood, sweat, and tears using a milling machine. There is also the laser cutting option, as mentioned. Given economies of scale, the result of either process should be quite affordable.

Re: Thick Table Boards?

Thick Table Boards?

I have seen pictures of go parlours in Japan where all the table boards seem to be 4 - 5 inches thick or more. I have not seen such thick table boards for sale here in the US. Does anyone know if the thick boards used in Japanese go parlours are just floor boards with the legs removed? Is this ...

Shin Kwang is indeed a Korean company:

I just got a set of their 10.6 mm glass stones this week. I think they are branded as "Phoenix." Shin Kwang's largest size appears to be 11.7 mm. I bought the 10.6 mm after reading about EdLee's preference for Size 38 shell & slate stones in another thread ...

I would also be interested in a board like that sold in the US, both in terms of the etched surface and Chinese dimensions.

That board looks great. Makes me want an agathis board to go with my Shin Kwang phoenix stones!

Re: Failure of free club culture

As someone who played their very first game a matter of minutes ago, on a 9x9 board against/with a 5 kyu opponent/teacher, I would prefer to play more games on smaller boards. Even at 9x9, I felt like I wasn't seeing almost anything going on -- or rather that I could only look at one thing at a time ...

Re: Yunzi Stones Sizes, Single Convex

More from YMI: Can you tell me about the size system you use? Is it correct that this system measures diameter and not thickness? Also, is it possible to get single convex Yunzi stones that are thicker than 6mm? You are correct. For the single convex stones, the sizing system is for diameter. Size 3 ...

My result: Your style is flexible

Your Go style is flexible: you can play for territory as well as for influence.
Usually you make such decisions according to the whole-board situation or the playing style of your opponent.
You may force him to choose the strategy he hates. For example, if he likes ...
