Re: What book should I buy at the Nihon ki-in?

I would look into buying Kiseido books in English at the Nihon-Kiin -- most are 30-45% off what the US Kiseido site states.

In terms of Japanese books, I was looking into tsumego books by Rin Kanketsu . He's a Taiwan-born Nihon-Kiin professional, and is a disciple of Honorary Tengen, Rin Kaiho ...

Re: Has anyone put new ways of play by AlphaGo into books et

There is a two volume set in Chinese called Master的一手 (which translates to Master's Move). It is written by Taiwanese professionals Hsiao Chenghao 蕭正浩 9p, Lin Shuyang 林書陽 8p, and Hsia Daming 夏大銘 6p. I haven't gotten a chance to read them, but they'll probably be my next purchase.

Re: Update on Taiwanese weiqi scene

Went to the 中華棋院 around the New Year. Was charged 180 NTD and given a glass of tea. Got three games in over 2 hours before I had to go.

Re: Japanese books/middle-game books

To the extent your budget allows, I would also buy any Kiseido book you think you will ever want at the Nihon Ki-in.

The prices at the Nihon Ki-in bookstore are 30%+ cheaper than the prices listed on the Kiseido website.

Re: Update on Taiwanese weiqi scene

Wow, sorry it was a wasted trip, but appreciate the update! I'll be in Taipei at the end of the year and will ask around if you haven't already found it by then.

Re: Update on Taiwanese weiqi scene

Thanks for the update! I wrote a couple of the posts, so it's unfortunate the Taiwan Chi Yuan moved. I thought they were renovating the last time I went (the tenant list actually had them listed at both the 3rd Floor and 8th Floor, but one was under renovation).

I'll be sure to check out the 中華棋苑 ...

Re: Help translating - Chinese and Korean on top of bowl lid

I remember seeing these plastic bowls around. It looks like Kirby/EdLee are right and it is actually from the Hanil Badook store: http://www.hanilbadook.com/

The exact product can be found under 기타상품 (Other Products) > 바둑통 (Baduk Bowls)

Re: Tricky Go terms to translate

Just my two cents on the below.

氣勢:
This looks like Chinese for force/power/momentum. Wiktionary and MDBG translate it this way. The first character 氣 means power/breath/life force (also a stone's liberty in Go) -- a pretty interesting insight into Chinese conceptual thinking and how it applies to ...

Re: Lee chang ho games

There's a dated Chinese book that covers his international tournament games, 李昌鎬世界冠軍激戰譜 Lee Chang Ho: Highlights of the International Competitions. Publisher link here .

Here are the titles they've chosen -- should note that he didn't win all of them:
1. 3rd Tong Yang Securities Cup (1992)
2. 4th ...

Re: Tsumego Question

Regarding the original problem, I'm a little concerned that the only path I was allowed to click on resulted in the failure. gonut's Q19 for ko does seems the most promising.

As John Fairbairn wrote, it could very well be that the original source of the problems used in the app had more textual ...

Re: Tsumego Question

Appreciate the responses. I could only find this failure path through brute force, so I'm about to chalk it up to an error in the app.

gonut, you're right -- this falls under the "Elementary" problem set and feels far from kyu-level ("Mid-Level" is suggested at 3dan and "Advanced" is for 5dan ...

Tsumego Question

I just downloaded 围棋练习大全, a Chinese tesuji, tsumego, and joseki app. On the positive side, there are a lot of problems -- 320 tesuji and 735x3 elementary-/middle-/upper-level life and death problems. On the negative side, I don't think you can see the solution unless you get it (probably better for ...

Re: Go in taiwan?

Just wanted to update this. Back in Taipei for the week, and decided to visit the Taiwan Chi Yuan, although I didn't play. The 3rd floor of their building is under renovation, so they're actually on the 8th floor now -- not sure if this is permanent or only temporary. They have open playing free of ...

Shell Go Stone Etiquette?

I finally got around to reading The Master of Go by Yasunari Kawabata and found the below passage odd:

... turned one of the Master's white stones right side up. If the white stones had face and obverse, then the face must be the inner, stripeless side of the clamshell; but few paid attention to ...
