Re: Filthy casual training

Well, the point I'm unhappy about is that the big difference is that I was simply not being punished for the same crime which black was committing.

I guess I'm impatient to see some sort of superiority emerge, which heralds my catapulting into a higher level. Not that impatience makes things happen ...

Re: Filthy casual training

The overarching theme I get from your comments is that I was let off by someone who couldn't punish me properly for my bullshit.

No wonder I felt in control, then. Someone wasn't biting me in the exposed, soft fleshy bits.

The point of resignation is still a bit jarring, but I can understand if my ...

Re: bilingualism and go strength

Don't you like the image of two guys pulling a rope to get the box up? Elevator seems so impersonal to me.

Re: Fedya's Mom, 1942-2015

It's so horrible to deal with the gradual destruction of a loved one's mind. Whenever I read about it, I just feel very fortunate that dementia stopped bothering my family after it took my great-grandmother. All those decisions are hard and painful, no matter if they tell you those were the right ...

Re: bilingualism and go strength

About Afrikaans, I just can't help but love a language which contains words like "hijsbakkie". It's a disrespectful and completely accurate description of what an elevator does. It's beautiful pragmatism.

"hoisting box" is so much easier to understand than "elevator", which only makes sense to ...

Re: Tami's Way Revisited

If I'm unsure about my reading, what I do is follow these steps:

1.Assess the area of relevance to the tsumego in question. Always cast this net slightly too wide!
2.Build a tree of every move possible within the area of relevance. (use something like cgoban if your memory isn't good enough to hold ...

Re: White tengen - a reasonable move?

100%?

People need to shape up ... something like 60% would be great already, but 100%? Seriously, it's not the perfect move. Especially in a competitive setting people should be ready to accept whatever curveballs you throw them.

Re: bilingualism and go strength

The gulf between British, US, Canadian and Australian English is really overstated. Maybe if they have a few more centuries, it'll start to get unintelligible, but for now they seem awfully close. There's a handful of unique expressions and some specific vocabulary, but nothing so completely ...

Re: bilingualism and go strength

people in the traditional go-playing countries pick up certain things about the basics of the game that we don't pick up (e.g. from messing around in school go clubs, or watching father and friends play)

I've noticed this before, that some Japanese lecturers were badly disappointed that some ...

Re: Player looking to improve - Help?

Focus on tsumego. At 20k, there's not much point in trying anything else. The returns for time spent are going to be much lower for anything else.

Knowing how to kill something, or how to survive, is going to give you more wins than anything else.

There's tasuki's go problem sets (probably a ...

Re: I'm a Go beginner and I really want learn

http://playgo.to/iwtg/en/ is where I did my first steps, and I still recommend it to anyone who asks about go.

If you complete that, and still feel like doing work, getting a book like Graded Go Problems for Beginners v. 1 or maybe starting on the Level Up! series from Baduktopia is the ...
