Re: Crazystone

So... you can't just put CrazyStone into "Analysis Mode", where it just keeps running in the background, providing the best found variation? And then, when you click a button, add that variation to the game tree? You can run it in analysis mode, and view the current estimated winrate, spread, etc ...

Re: Have we been duped by AlphaGo?

I am not really sure what you are trying to say here. That more interesting games are automatically of higher quality? It's hard to state it more plainly. To me the equations are simple:
1. fewer and less severe mistakes = stronger play
2. stronger play (on both sides) = higher quality game

You ...

Re: Have we been duped by AlphaGo?

Really? So you would call a game with plenty of mistakes and a game without any mistakes to be of the same quality? Sometimes, sure. I enjoy the game of go. Moves may be bad for boring reasons, or really interesting reasons. Mistakes just have little to do with quality.
If so, have you accoplished ...

Re: Have we been duped by AlphaGo?

The premise is that, in general, given shorter time limits a player will make more mistakes, or more severe mistakes, or both. We already admitted that there might be certain limits beyond which this does not apply. For example: the game can be of the same quality if the time is 2 sec or 4 sec. On ...

Re: Have we been duped by AlphaGo?

But the underlying assumption of such strategy would be that the player with shorter time would make mistakes which he/she would not make if the times were equal. Q.E.D. What was to be demonstrated to me is that such mistakes impacted game quality in some non-tautological way (where we don't just ...

Re: Four Stone Difference from KGS to Tygem?

I don't play that often, but I've been a 1D on KGS for a bit and just recently ranked up to 3D tygem, and the last few games I played feel even. Might matter what time we're playing, too, given Tygem's quirky rating "system." Based on my results from people who had several hundred+ games, versus ...

You can still do this, since people manage their time differently (e.g. Go/Kitani).

Re: Have we been duped by AlphaGo?

I guess what we disagree about is the exact point at which the curve flattens for a pro. You seem to assume that for a pro it would flatten at around 3 hours per game...

So I keep thinking of my idea of asking two pros to play a game with different time limits - one has 3 hours the other 6 hours ...

Re: Hajin Lee will play a live commented game against CrazyS

Setting up alternate boards with this joseki does not usually favor this weird descent, but there's no question that crazystone does not see this clamp; though once the clamp is made, it can see the disaster. It sees the clamp after the atari at G6, but this seems like a bad exchange.

Re: Have we been duped by AlphaGo?

erislover makes a good point about the different time limits probably not changing the outcome of the matches, but I don't believe that's really at issue. I hear the issue being the resulting quality of the play as a factor of time allowed to consider one's next move. Myungwan Kim: m

Re: Have we been duped by AlphaGo?

I don't know where I sit exactly, but I think I would agree with Kirby . First, even if we accept that slower games are better, that doesn't imply that slower games change results—the better player will win fast or slow, we'll just hear more pro criticism of the moves in fast play. And I don't know ...

Re: Tips for using Crazy Stone to analyze games

Patience also helps. What you might find is an A B C D situation, where it prefers a play at A, but when you analyze the position with A, it prefers B, and so on, until it settles on a move. So at critical situations in the game you may need to try a few moves and let it sit an analyze for a while ...

Re: Have we been duped by AlphaGo?

Mike Novack, AlphaGo reached its strength through self-play. The database games were basically used as a foothold for self-play training. AlphaGo shows us that the proverb should be "lose your first ten million games as soon as possible."

Re: Have we been duped by AlphaGo?

I have a hard time knowing how much of this OP is tongue-in-cheek and how much is real opinion with a reduced-fat whipped cream topping. I don't know why we should look to any particular era's fashion in go openings and consider them canonical. Why should 3-4 points be preferred over 4-4 points ...
