I love Aji's Quest and have shown it to members in the past. Great little web comic.Koosh wrote:I feel that Aji's quest (and the printable brochure introducing Go) might be helpful for OP. Just going to leave this here.

Re: How not to promote a go club in the middle of nowhere
Hello bahkana and others,
How's the situation at the moment?
Perhaps you want to give us an update on the go club and yourself, how you handle affairs currently. I am anxious to learn if you were able to keep the youngsters interested, perhaps even attract new ones. Or has interest vanished over ...

Re: How not to promote a go club in the middle of nowhere
Tekesta,
Thank you for the suggested alternatives. I avoid doing the long explanation right away, especially with younger kids. The reason being that the longer it takes them to actually start playing, the less interested they will become. The best method I have used to getting kids interested is ...

I'd get an updated picture of my Go "study" space, but all it would be currently is a giant stack of boxes, with my Go board in a box somewhere at the bottom of the pile.

Re: How not to promote a go club in the middle of nowhere
Thank you everyone again for the suggestions!
I'm not sure whether this would be helpful at all (I'm mainly speculating here), but it be logical to incorporate the notion of movement? It may be that one of the determining factors of what a certain child likes is based on that particular child's ...

Re: How not to promote a go club in the middle of nowhere
Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions. I am feeling better after getting so many ideas and will keep going. The method I have found to work the best, especially with younger players is to start them on a 9x9 or smaller and get them playing first capture within minutes of sitting down ...

Re: How not to promote a go club in the middle of nowhere
I might be able to do a short pitch during a teacher inservice, otherwise I'll have to do it on an individual basis but I think the idea is solid.

Re: Eye Catching Posters/Fliers
Some interesting points came up in my club thread so I am going to take longer on the poster than expected. I will be not only making posters that focus on the social aspects, but also tying in the plethora of different exciting factors like fighting and invasions, also I'll have more pictures to ...

Re: How not to promote a go club in the middle of nowhere
I really like some of the ideas, especially a tournament with participation prizes. The biggest problem I am finding is that the kids do not read. Despite all of the different posters, the full set of Hikaru no Go in the library, and my manual interaction with students on occasion a large number of ...

Re: Eye Catching Posters/Fliers
Very good read. I am mainly trying to appeal to the geeky gamer type who go for hard games as with this small of a district almost all of the general students are in a handful of sports/clubs already. I'll make some alternate texts for the final file which will focus more on the social fun aspects ...

Re: Hello!
Some teachers in the Portland OR area have had some success by combining their chess and go clubs. You might consider that.
I'd love to do that but there isn't even a Chess club here - we're talking a school with a graduating class size of 30. Most of the people I have got really interested in ...

Thanks goTony and Bonobo.
- Bonobo, yes it is all completely separated. I'll see if I can throw together an alternative background and get the ok from the students this week. The font is Urban Stone by Roland Huse http://www.dafont.com/urban-stone.font - free for personal use.

Hello!
Hello everyone, I finally decided to make an account last night. I'm 26 and I've been playing off and on for about three years now. My day job is a Systems Administrator at a small school in northern Wisconsin. My hobbies besides go are art, cooking, martial arts, and a million more. Go is ...

Re: Eye Catching Posters/Fliers
I realize this thread is old but I thought I'd add a shot of the posters I just finished. The kids are students of the high school I work and the woman is my wife. I don't own the rights to some of the things in the background but thought I'd share regardless. I might be able to do some changes to ...

How not to promote a go club in the middle of nowhere
Hello everyone!
It has been over a year since I started a Go Club in a small school district in the unpopulated northern tundra of the US and my one remaining member will be graduating soon. The school is small enough where all grade levels are present in one building and the club is open to all ...
