Re: AGM 2017

A slight problem I see with the change in membership fees is that the member countries no longer need to literally put the money where their mouth is when it comes to their number of members (players) and the voting system at the AGM. Under the current system, if you declare more players and get ...

Article 7, Yes, and ?

Commentary on article 7 clause 2 is about snapback. There is no snapback here

Re: Life and death dispute under Japanese 1989 rules

But the EGF has abandoned the Japanese 1989 Rules. If Japanese style rules are used, these are Verbal European-Japanese Rules.
Individual countries have their own rulesets. Some use the AGA rules, some have adopted the EGF approach of not really defining rules and some use the J1989.

In bridge ...

Re: Life and death dispute under Japanese 1989 rules

I should have probably stated, that I am refering to a typical local European MacMahon tournament, no professionals anywhere near the place. Some European countries still hold J1989 as their official rules of play. While I would like AGA to be adopted, it is hard to push such a change through ...

Life and death dispute under Japanese 1989 rules

While disputes about the status of a group are rare, they do occur. To be clear, I am talking about the tournament situation when each player insists on a different status of a particular group after two consecutive passes and they call the referee. The J1989 rules define "alive" and "dead" since ...

Re: Questions ...

Hi,

firstly, many thanks for the software. Just about every (not hand-paired) tournament I have ever attended was paired using your program. In the new version, I really like the statistics (no more counting n-point players by hand), the search box for players and the two types of unwanted pairings ...

Re: Scoring at the end of the game.

Many thanks for all the helpful replies. Very much appreciated
Do not be discouraged if it seems overwhelming at first . Scoring is not the easiest part of go. Compared to chess, it is the prize to pay for not having to learn the movement of each piece, initial position, castling, en passant, 50 ...

Bye distribution and SOS compensation in swiss tournaments

Hi,

for this question please only consider involuntary odd man byes, not "I want to go sightseeing" byes. I will be referring to a split and slip (eg. 1-5, 2-6, 3-7, 4-8) paired swiss seeded using pre-tournament rating with a fairly small number of participants (eg. 7, 9, 11)

There seems to be two ...

Re: An interesting new rule idea.

The point being that striving to write up a perfect definition that can be universally among players is a little pointless anyways. Just as long as were all on the same page and when the games over, we both know who won.
The point is that there are games where big money is involved and "being on ...

Re: An interesting new rule idea.

An "independent group" is a group of connected stones, all sharing liberties which require two separate eyes in order to permanently maintain their place on the board. Compare this to a group left in seki which is not independent but depends and shares liberties with an enemy group. In Japan they ...

Re: An interesting new rule idea.

I think that one of the main problems with group tax is defining what a group is. "A group" may seem like a simple concept, but it is actually quite hard to define it precisely. You might want to post a good definition of a group before going further with your group tax idea.

Japaneae 1949 rules English translation?

Hi, does anyone know if an English translation of the original Japanese 1949 rules is available online, or if it exists at all? I would really like to have a look through them. Thanks in advance

Unclarity of AGA rules

(partly a reaction to http://www.lifein19x19.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=10634)

Since the AGA rules were written outside of the eastern Go tradition, one would expect them to be usable without any prior knowledge of the game, by just applying what is written in them. But I found a few points ...

Re: This 'n' that

My impression is that most go tournaments in the West use area scoring, and most tournament players are aware that eliminating dame before winning a ko is advantageous.
As far as I know, with the exception of Britain, France and the Congress, Europe still uses territory scoring for the majority of ...
