Re: Introductory Chess Books
Well you're right, it's not really embarrassing. I'm just interested in learning it, as chess is historically closer to our culture. Consequently, in Germany and other western countries you often meet people who play it.

Introductory Chess Books
Hi everyone,
it's kind of embarrassing that I as a European actively play Go, but when it comes to chess I know not more than the rules
Are there any introductory (English/German) Chess books similar to "A complete introduction" or "The second book of Go" you could recommend?
Not that I intend to ...

How often do you clean your shell stones?
Is it necessary to wipe them with a cotton towel after every use? Or is it enought to do so once a month or so - I only use them about once every three days.
Of course, after using them for several hours at the Go-Club it might be reasonable to clean them, but cleaning them once you've replayed only ...

Re: Favourite Go Proverbs?
I love this topic, sadly I only discovered it now
Anyways, I'll add my two cents
Mine is "mieux vaut un tient que deux tu l'auras" but it's not a go proverb
I'm not sure how to translate that in english... I think it is "A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush" but I'm not sure ...

Re: Tomoe's Study Journal
Hi, thanks for the thorough commentary
I made a similar mistake at the local go club last night and a stronger player also advised me to play the pincer rather than the shoulder hit.

Re: Tomoe's Study Journal
Hi, it's been a while, and of course I didn't follow my study plan I played some offline games and studied occasionally though.
Here is a game I played on KGS yesterday:
I would appreciate some comments. I'm especially interested in whether I could've caught the white group on the right side ...

Re: Beginner-Question on professional game
I actually didn't try to count accurately (as you said I probably wouldn't have been able to do so anyways), once I didn't expect that someone would surrender at this point if he's "only a few points" behind. Until now it was my understanding that one only surrenders after <150 moves if a group of ...

Beginner-Question on professional game
Hello everyone,
I just replayed the following game played by Honinbo Shusaku and Ota Yuzo.
http://www.lifein19x19.com/forum/download/file.php?id=5884
I just can't figure out why white resigned. It's 1 am here and I'm quite tired, so please excuse if I overlooked something really obvious ...

Re: Bowl Lust!
Thanks a lot From now on I'll keep my stones in the bowls without concern.
I have heard of staining being a problem specifically with bowl of kaya or another more resinous wood, rather than wood bowls in general. Perhaps that's what the brochure was referring to?
That seems plausible! Sakura ...

Re: Bowl Lust!
Hi Ed,
what I wrote was from memory, so it isn't that precise actually.
On the second last page of the brochure it says:
Important note on storage
If you keep stones in the new Go bowls for a long time, the color of the bowl may stain the stones. When not in use, it is recommended that you ...

Re: Bowl Lust!
Hi,
I've got Sakura go bowls similar to those posted by Ed and slate and shell go stones from Kuroki goishi ten.
According to Kuroki's brochure on go stone care, you must not store shell stones in wooden bowls once they might become stained. Thus, if I know that I'm not going to use my go board ...

I'm also considering taking part in the Nihon Ki-in Summer School one day when I'm a little stronger. But I guess they probably won't visit Kamakura every year...

Kamakura Jubango
Hello everyone,
in my database nine of the ten games of the Kamakura Jubango (Go Seigen vs. Kitani Minoru) are included. Game 5 is either missing or not marked as Game 5.
However, the following game played by Go and Kitani in 1940 is included:
