National Rule Sets and Dominance?

Just a question. I am trying to start following pro tournaments and such, and am muddling my way through finding info online about all this. I know there has been much talk about Japanese dominance, and then the Korean take over, etc... etc....

I have two questions for those more familiar with the ...

Re: Was ready to start playing go again and this happened...

How timely. I recently posted about the other side of this. What if you don't know if you should play into an area? Or, what if you think trying might yield some gains of the opponent makes a mistake. I was worried that people would respond exactly as the OP did. The consensus however is ..... go ...

Re: New tsume-go technique

This seems very Zen to me. Like focusing on a koan. I would assume that's no coincidence, and people may have used this for study throughout the years. Very cool idea.

Obligated to play?

Just a general question here. I guess it is really a beginner question, but I am not sure that's all it is.

Let's assume a player has a nice side of the board well walled off. Within are roughly 25 points of territory, wide open. This type position poses questions for me, and I am not sure the best ...

Re: Deciphering Lasker?

Yeah.... Edward.... but he was ranked among the highest on the planet for about a decade. Clearly grandmaster strength, he just had to always contend with a few people a bit better I think.

As for do I think this book offers something better or different? I honestly don't know because I haven't ...

Deciphering Lasker?

Ok, this is kind of a litmus post if you will. I have an idea, but I am not sure how much it might we worth pursuing, so I figured I would see what people here might think. My first book on Go was "Go and Go Moku" by Edward Lasker.

Now, this book ...

Re: What is the difference between Reduction and Invasion?

This is actually a pretty great question, and it looks like people are giving answers coming from different levels. Different interpretations of the words even in regards to the game. I always think there is a fusion here.... some actions are neither purely an invasion or a reduction, but a mix of ...

Re: Sphere-Go

I think it looks awesome!

Got me thinking. Maybe a traditional lined board of sorts, with a frame built around it.... then fill it with clear marbles. Get the same structure you have with the magnets, but with a more traditional surface showing through to the bottom. Then play with black and white ...

Re: bilingualism and go strength

I don't think the differences on English are over stated.... quite the contrary. The whole dialog about a Jenny Wren or Christopher.... both are foreign to me. But that in no way means my proficiency in English is lacking. It means I am unaware of a cultural reference.

And I also do not think with ...

Re: bilingualism and go strength

I think maybe you are confusing cultural differences with language proficiency. UK, USA, Australia... all 3 speak English. But some references and words are VASTLY different. Does that mean that none of them can truly be considered proficient in their primary language unless they know all the slang ...

Re: iPad go AI: which one to use after SmartGo Kifu?

Not sure how helpful this comment might be to you, but I feel your pain. I get a very real sense that a lot of player discount AI completely as a solid learning method. Some seem to think other than having a teacher play a game with you, and comment as you go, everything else is inferior. Books ...

Re: bilingualism and go strength

Wait.... are people taking this poll seriously? Is not the idea that a game which is far more prevalent among Asian communities, but this is an English forum, being considered a massive skewing issue? Can we test how strong players are in Korea versus if they are bilingual?

This is like going to ...

Re: Just the stones

Just a thought.

I want to have a quick and dirty set to keep in the car, and maybe even make a few quick 9x9 sets for friends and such. Ignoring the boards, which may be roll out mats and such, I have an idea for stone.

My local dollar stores have glass stones, sort of like for fish tanks of plant ...

Re: How should I begin studying Joseki?

An amateur kyu or even dan can understand the play of a pro? Which mushrooms do the rest of need to buy?

Being able to understand a play you see, versus coming to that idea yourself, are two very different things. If no one could ever understand the plays of those stronger than them, they would ...

Re: On "Reading books to improve?"

If you can say it, you can write it. I in no way think everything that CAN be written HAS been written.... as it will never 100% all be written. But to suggests that it CAN be taught by speaking to someone, but those same words can not be written is a false assumption. I would even say that showing ...
