Re: Four Stone Difference from KGS to Tygem?

It seems to me that 1 stone of rank on KGS is more like 2 ranks on Tygem.
That is, each 'rank' on Tygem is actually worth significantly less than 1 stone of handicap.

As a result the tygem scale is far more spread out.
Dan players are usually ranked higher on Tygem than kgs, since the Tygem ranks ...

Re: Is anything wrong with this joseki variant?

2. If you can read two moves further than your opponent, it doesn't really matter if you play this joseki or the other one. Not to say that this isn't an interesting topic

Very true!

I think the fact that my 8 kyu opponents probably havent seen it and dont have a clue what to do about it also ...

Re: Is anything wrong with this joseki variant?

Alright, it seems that its a possible joseki play since its been played in pro games.

The drawback seems to be that it leaves more aji, not that it is tactically flawed in any way.

Several times my opponents have seen the unusual move and responded by immediately trying to cut it because they ...

Is anything wrong with this joseki variant?

In the 3-4 high approach, inside contact joseki, I have started playing the following move:

$$ | . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . . X X O . . .
$$ | . . X , O . O . .

Re: 9-point corner shape confusion

I think is a mistake, Black can take the ko

I'm not seeing the ko that you're referring to. B5 isn't on the board yet.

Wow I hallucinated that one!

Hehe, we've all done that sometimes.

In this the original 9 point sarea in this thread is safe, but if itwere one smaller, a rectangular eight ...

I can beat Cosumi and I'm around 8k, but its pretty close. I'd estimate it in the 8k-10k range.

Re:

Hi Alex,

, what if B pushes at N17 and cuts M18 ?

I believe that I would probably capture the stone but lose the stones to the right of it. This is what ended up happening in the game later on.

Was there a better way I couldve played that would get a better result than this?

The result ...

My game vs James on Dave Peck's Go site (~8k)

My game against my friend James that we played on Dave Peck's Go site. (corresponance).
I think that James will post here as well, so you are analyzing for TWO people. :)

What could we have done better? Thanks!

Re: Usefulness of 9x9

I went from complete beginner to somewhere around 15k by playing hundreds games of 9x9 against the computer. Its definitely very useful for beginners.

For more experienced players I'm not sure how helpful it is, but it does seem useful to me for practicing the endgame. On the smaller board there ...

Re: Useful books to become stronger

The three books that I feel have helped me the most in progressing from 15k to 7k are:

Tesuji by James Davies
Attack and Defense by Ishida Akira
Opening Theory Made Easy by Otake Hideo

Re: Reading books to improve?

The following books helped me a lot to get from 15k to 7k over the past few months:

Tesuji by James Davies
Opening Theory Made Easy by Otake Hideo
Attack and Defense by Ishida Akira

I just read and worked through these three books on a loop, doing one, then another, then another, then going back ...

Re: Anything other than a 1 moku is a loss.

So I've been toying with this idea for a long time but now I'm becoming pretty adamant about it. I feel like anytime I win a game by more than 1 moku, I actually should count it down as a loss simply because my play was clearly inferior. Not inferior to my opponents, inferior to Christ's. I picture ...

How do I get the Go style web app to look at new games?

I'm using this:
http://gostyle.j2m.cz/webapp.html

It isn't getting any of my new games, its only seeing the first 5 I played, which were mostly against bots.
