Re: Critique please?

At the risk of sounding too negative I would suggest that at your level you are going to benefit more from from just playing than from reviewing. I would judge the level to be somewhere around 20k. Just playing as much as you can will eliminate a lot of the mistakes you made much quicker than ...

Re: Opinion on this opening?

Thanks, that's actually pretty helpful. I admit that lately I've been focusing on making eyes fairly soon, as there's been many times in past games when I find I've left it too late and I've lost a large group because they got surrounded. I didn't want to suffer that frustration again. Lately I have ...

Re: Opinion on this opening?

Opinion on this opening?

Firstly the actual game itself went on about a hundred moves longer but The Many faces Of Go program didn't seem to save it any more beyond this point, so that was pretty frustrating!

I've been studying and playing for about 18 months or so, so I still feel more like a beginner than anything. But I ...

Go has a problem with "game tree complexity snobbery"

And yes I know chess has it's own problems with snobbery too! As a long term chess player I have branched out into Go in the past couple of years. I have enjoyed learning, but one thing I have noticed time and time again. When Go players talk about the complexity of Go, they always seem to delight ...

Re: How do I know when invasion is a good idea?

The concept seems intimidating, but in way I'm pleased. It means that aspect of Go isn't merely a mathematical exercise.

How do I know when invasion is a good idea?

Lately I've played too many games where I get overly defensive and suddenly I find my opponent has started snatching huge chunks of the board. Often I'd like to invade his territory, but that's when it gets tricky. I know about the 3-3 invasion in the opening and if there are few stones on the board ...

I've read Go for Beginners by Kaoru Iwamoto- what next?

I thought this book was pretty good and gave me a firm footing on the basics. Although reading some reviews on it online it seems many people found it rather tough going and didn't consider it ideal for beginners. But then after having read My System by Nimzowitsch on chess I don't have much of a ...

Re: Do you think I enjoy go?

If Go was easy to master, it wouldn't be as satisfying to play. :D

If you feel like you really need to take a break, play some light game, or even video game and after a while the urge to play a "deep" game will no doubt grip you again.

Re: Frustrated

What kept my interest going in the early stages of Go is not actually winning, or even capturing groups, but the satisfaction of keeping a group alive by forming two eyes. The book Go For Beginners by Kaoru Iwamoto helped a lot here. Once I learned how to form two eyes to protect a group my ...

Re: Complexity of Chess versus Go

I would argue that Go is more about the over-arching strategy of the game more than individual tactics. Whereas, Chess is all about the tactical considerations.

Western Chess has plenty of over arching strategy, more so than Chinese Chess, which almost purely tactical. (Shogi is more ...

Re: Critique for one of my first 19x19 games?

Thanks! Yes, that critique helps a lot. Obviously I've still a lot to learn, but I enjoy the learning process of complex games. Still, I think I've improved some in the last six months, since before I assumed false eyes weren't that important!

Regarding 245, and 249 in retrospect I think I was in ...

Critique for one of my first 19x19 games?

Firstly, apologies for using a non standard way of showing a game. I have an absolute dinosaur of a PC- Windows 98 with no internet connection and the DVD burner on it gave up long ago. So I did it the old fashioned way and took a film of my computer Go game and uploaded via a friends PC! I think ...
