Re: Yet another study journal

Yesterday I finished vol 2, 1st pass:

took 60 seconds:
109
123

took 180 seconds:
111

Today I plan to work through this volume again - hopefully successfully, but I expect to still have some trouble, and have to redo it.

Re: Trolling in physics.

As a physicist (or maybe just a trolling one?), let me try this here:

Take a newspaper with a big headline and stand before a mirror. Hold up the newspaper so that you can see the headline and try to read it. You will notice that the letters are flipped:
The first letter of each word is not at the ...

Continuing in vol. 2:

Took 60 seconds:
91

Took 180 seconds:
93s

Wrong:
70 - going too fast and not verifying
94 - failure to read opponents best moves / all variations

Re: Yet another study journal

Yesterday, I started to redo vol. 1. I did all the problems up to 45 successfully.

Today, I finished vol. 1 successfully. I began vol. 2 and worked up to problem 54.

The following took me more than 30seconds to solve:
2: 90 seconds

The following I got wrong:
3: Failure to check all variations ...

Re: Yet another study journal

Had been busy lately, but yesterday I made progress.

I went through volume 1 of the L&D. I got 1 problem wrong and 6 problems took longer to get than I wanted. I will redo the book until I am satisfied.

Problems that took ~60 seconds to find and verify the correct variation:
21
37
68
83
90 ...

Yet another study journal

These study journals seem to be all the rage lately.

I have decided to follow the advice as outlined here: http://www.igoindonesia.org/tutorial-go/115-article/846-to-become-a-master-of-go-is-not-easy-but-became-an-amateur-5d-or-6d-its-not-hard.html .

First up is the Lee Changho's ...

(I'm fairly sure that I'm the only one that uses emacs which leaves *~ backup pages)

Create a directory, e.g. ~/.backups. Then add this to your .emacs file, that will place all the *~ files in that directory from now on:

(add-to-list 'backup-directory-alist ; Move all those NAME~ files to ...

Re: What do you want to see in a Go book?

A modern, fairly complete, joseki reference book/series. The only sizable one in English is 35 years old, and Go has changed dramatically.

Re: Online Materials for First Timers?

The best thing I've found for this purpose is a video that the Second Life Go Club made a couple years back.

m

There are 3 videos, the first is an overview and basic rules. The second explains the ko rule, scoring, ranks, etc. The third would be complicated for absolute beginners, but explains ...

Re: Best version of linux?

The executable is "nm-applet". If you just run that, it should come up, so you can stick it in your .xsession or .xinitrc file or whatever you use. If you're in Gnome, then there's probably some sort of menu-driven way to go about it, but I wouldn't know

Re: Roguelikes

I've ascended a few times as a wizard. I never really got into the other classes much, but I really like Magic Bane and Identify. I find that if I can hedge my risks through careful engraving, and being able to identify what everything is, the game is easier.

Re: Best version of linux?

My experience is Arch > Gentoo > Ubuntu, with more distance between Gentoo and Ubuntu than between Arch and Gentoo. As far as ease of use for those completely foreign to Linux or Unix, Ubuntu or one of the other ones typically easy for beginners (which I think would be something like Fedora, but I ...
