I have recently ordered stones size 36 from Kuroki. When they arrived, they seemed really big: much bigger than the glass size 36 stones that I had used before, possibly because they’re fuller and more regular.
Now they seem pretty normal and even on a thin side, so I might consider getting size 38 ...

Re: Shin kaya vs kaya
Yes, but I doubt YMI have boards with raised ink lines. But, I agree. I own a YMI board, and the color is mostly the same (this one is slightly more orangey, although my YMI board darkened with age a bit).

Shin kaya vs kaya
How does one tell the difference between a kaya and a shin kaya board? This board has raised lines, Japanese style, but otherwise, I am not really sure how to tell.

Re: Best Wood for Go Bowls
Just ordered camphor (kusu) bowls from Kuroki. I generally prefer darker colors for the bowls, to contrast with the board (for which I prefer yellow-orange color). If I was going with the lighter ones, I’d get kehada or sendan.

Wooden chips used to fill in the gaps in a knot
I received feedback from a distributor of kaya go boards, and two of his boards have what he described as “wooden blocks or chips used to fill in the gaps in a gnarl/knot” on the back surface. Pictures attached. I was wondering if anyone has experience with these, and if it’s unadvisable to buy a ...

Re: Is it worth it to buy from Kuroki
Does anyone know how Kurokigoishi's Blue Label stones compare to jitsuyo of other Japanese stone distributors? I'm asking because he currently doesn't have size 36, so I'm considering getting that elsewhere. I got a sampler of size 38 and would be satisfied with Blue Label quality in smaller size.

Re: Is it worth it to buy from Kuroki
I would get their simple no-hinge folding board, which is like $40 (plus $40 for shipping — to the US at least) and whatever stones/bowls you like. This will give you something to play on (and possibly take to a club). Then, once you save up more/once they have a better board you like, you can get ...

Re: Is it worth it to buy from Kuroki
I much prefer the quality of his stuff to GGG’s. GGG’s boards look like plywood (I even like YMI’s boards more for shin kaya). Their non-shin-kaya agathis boards painted with yellow paint and sound/feel accordingly. Glass stones sit lopsided on the board and have many imperfections and bumps on the ...

Thanks. I couldn’t find English translation for that site. But then, another board just appeared on KG (albeit one I don’t like). So, maybe I’ll keep monitoring…

Re: Thickness of the board
Well, it turns out the board I purchased was cracked, so they never sent it and refunded me the money.
I am wondering if Kuroki Goishi is expecting more boards, or if it’s rare for them to get new boards, and I should just buy one of what they have. (I emailed them to ask, but they didn’t reply. In ...
