Babelardus: between us, we're probably a pretty decent Go player
Heh. It's possible that my reading ability comes from the time I've played Chess. The one thing that often still confuses me is fighting with captures/recaptures and ko.
Hi
In Chess, there's a Dutch series called the "Steps ...

Re: Go curriculum book series
I recognise myself in the comments upthread that talk about principles being fine but needing to be backed up by reading power, by the way. I feel pretty comfortable principles-wise, but I can't read my way out of a paper bag. So I've belatedly started trying to do tsumego every single day ...

Re: Leela has a new version
EDIT - and I've now figured out that the correct CLI input is (assuming you're in the Leela dir) "./leela_062_linux_x64" ... I'm still unfamiliar with most of the syntax and was omitting the ./
If it's any consolation, I've been working with Linux (as an embedded system or server) for about 15 ...

Re: Go curriculum book series
OK, thanks
In that case, I'm going to order those as well, so I can do them after I finish the Jump Level Up problems. Even though they are 'for children', there are some in there that are harder than expected, even in book 1.

I've been reading your First Fundamentals book. The principles are rather obvious:

Re: Go curriculum book series
About Graded Go Problems: There is a series "Graded Go Problems for Beginners", which says to go from 30k to 10k, and a series "Graded Go Problems for Dan Players", which obviously is aimed at 1d playes and stronger.
Is there no series for players in between?

Re: How did you get to your current rank?
Well, I did buy a few books.
1. Level Up Review 1 and 2 (just to see if I can do everything mentioned in the Level Up books already)
2. Jump Level Up 1-5 + answers
3. First Fundamentals and Fighting Fundamentals (by Robert Jasiek)
4. Tesuji by James Davies (I really need some more information on ...

Re: Well, that was embarrasing
In the simplified diagram you posted, you can just recapture when Black captures your big toothpaste part and stay connected. I assume the actual situation didn't have that property?
Yes it did have that, and the group on the left would survive, but in the actual game, the four stone part shown ...

Re: Well, that was embarrasing
(So of course I'll post about it publicly.)
I just resigned a game that I was winning by 20+ points because I lost a big dragon and didn't take the time to actually count. Oops.
LOL. A few days ago I lost a game by losing a big dragon because I didn't take the time to actually connect it. And I ...

Re: AlphaGo "Bug" Is Fixed
AlphaGo is four stones stronger against it's former self; I wonder if it is also four stones stronger than any human. What I would be interested in is to see a match 'in the old way', against Ke Jie for example: Start normally, and then take one handicap stone for the next step if you lose. Keep ...

Re: How did you get to your current rank?
At OGS (where I've just started out) I'm ranked at 11k.
Yesterday I lost an even game against a 13k by 28.5 points. Today, the auto-handicap on OGS gave 4 stones to a 14k opponent (shouldn't that handicap have been 3 stones?), and I won that game by 26.5 without ever getting into trouble.

Re: How did you get to your current rank?
I've also had to fight the mind-set you detail - and while I'll rage at my screen whenever I mess up the should-be dead 3-3 invasion or whatever when in byoyomi - or throw away 100 points on simple life and death, well, it's a part of the game and someday I'll actually be good enough that it won't ...

That's another way of looking at it of course
Babelardus, it sounds to me as though you are electing to play with time limits which are too tight for you. No one who voluntarily enters into a game should complain about running out of time: it is part of the conditions you agreed to. Just ...
