I know where the stones are at the end of it Hi Dan,
Very interesting discussion.
I don't quite understand what you mean by know here.
I (conceptually) understand you can recognize shapes (say, a face, or an apple). At the same time, I was under the impression you couldn't consciously generate a ...

Re: Visualization
My thought process is usually more like "I know that joseki A emphasizes the top and joseki B emphasizes the right, so let's go with joseki B", but I know where the stones are at the end of it, which can be important, like if there's a ladder. It's easier with joseki than regular reading because ...

Re: Visualization
Interesting. We had the example earlier about joseki choice. If I'm trying to think about, say, whether to pincer an approach to my 4-4 stone, I can abstractly think about the possible outcomes. But—assuming I pincer and the opponent plays 3-3—I don't have any clear understanding of what the outcome ...

Re: Visualization
dfan, that wasn't a very good explanation of my question (a little too much bourbon last night). For more detail, at my current level of reading, a lot of my decisions are based on instinct and hope that it's going to turn out well. I want to have some ability to make harder decisions based on ...

Re: Visualization
I have aphantasia and am about 3k KGS/AGA, and have a chess rating of over 2000 (probably about equivalent to 1d). So you can definitely get that far without being able to visualize. I'm currently trying to prove that one can get even farther. Does it feel like you can "figure anything out" or are ...

Re: Visualization
For more explanation, I really don't remember dreams except for maybe once a month. The most common time when I remember is waking up in a panic with some nightmare that I had. In those cases, I can conceive of some pattern of events, but nothing more than some imagined horror.

Re: Visualization
I never remember any visual sensation of my dreams at all. I might wake up with some emotion based on thinking that the dream was real, but I can't remember what I "saw" during the dream.
From my research about aphanthasia, some of us see images during dreams. The ability to see an image during a ...

Re: Visualization
I started playing go again after a pretty long break. I realized how much trouble I have reading and happened to read this thread. After thinking about it, researching things, and talking to people, I realized that I think differently than do most people: I have no capacity to visualize anything. I ...

Re: Leela has a new version
I think a lot of the difference comes down to how many simulations Leela is getting to run.
When I use Leela to analyze the best next move, I find that usually Leela "decides" what is best within 100k simulations. Very rarely does a variation sequence change or get bumped from first rank after ...

Re: 8k vs 7k on DGS: probably bad joseki choice
A question for the stronger players, not a suggestion: what about pincering black's approach in the lower left at 22 to try to do something with the result in the upper left? I guess there's not much thickness because of the peeps, but it seems better than giving black a pretty solid group next to ...

Re: Leela has a new version
I think a lot of the difference comes down to how many simulations Leela is getting to run. I had an email exchange with the developer where he estimated a doubling of thinking time as adding one stone to the strength of the program. Obviously, that depends on where you start from, and there must be ...

Re: Brilliant Move from AI
Not in any way belittling the program's achievement, I have a strong memory of seeing Xing Tian's tesuji before, and (much less strongly) equate it with Go Seigen. If the latter memory is correct, it will likely be in Gengen Gokyo or Guanzipu but as a correction by Go to the traditional solution. I ...

Re: Frustrated
I'd certainly recommend handicap stones. They make the game interesting for both players, and teaches both new things.
If you're having issues finding games on OGS, maybe another server? OGS is certainly a good server for newer players. If only they turned on the handicap... I don't think a 15k ...

Re: Counting score
My question is just ... why? Can't [players on Tygem] just challenge lower rated players?
I have no idea why people like trouncing people far below their skill level, but they apparently do, especially on Tygem. Maybe some people don't realize they can set a higher rank to start, or they just want ...
