So I haven't been active much on here in this forum for a while and I also had a couple of hiatuses where I didn't play much go for some weeks due to other activities. But still there was at least some progress since I began playing Go roughly four years ago.
I'm now at around 6k EGF and yesterday ...

Re: Making a Professional kifu book
Concerning pro games, I've heard advice to look at Japanese games from the 1970s, which are easier to understand than modern games.
My humble opinion would likely not pass muster as advice, but I actually enjoyed (and still do) playing through Japanese games from the period of about 1950 to 1970 ...

Re: Future of pro go?
I don't think that this draught, as you called it, is unusual as such. The top players usually play in top events only, which are not that frequent.

Good point. I've updated my post.
Maybe this thread could also be moved to or linked to the Computer Go subforum?

Well, this is quite a pain in the neck. What eventually worked on my machine was the procedure Example of compiling and running - Ubuntu described here: https://github.com/gcp/leela-zero

Re: AlphaZero paper discussion (not the same as AlphaGo Zero
I've been out of the trade for a while but I'd say that the specs do not seem too shabby. Where were they actually described? I only recall seeing things like "1G hash, 64 threads" - but 64 at which kind of hardware? (OC, we can roughly guess from the pos/s given.)
Honestly, I've made the exact ...

Re: AlphaZero paper discussion (not the same as AlphaGo Zero
I have a few questions for the chess experts here:
- looking at the chess openings is AlphaZero playing the long standard opening book lines or has it found a way to diverge early without playing bad moves? My impression of chess was human knowledge of the opening was closer to perfect play than ...

May he rest in peace. What a life this man must have lived.
And incredible that he was still active. Above Yuri Averbakh was mentioned. At age 95 he currently is indeed the oldest living chess grandmaster, but he's been inactive for a very long time now. His played his last rated game in 1992 ...

Today, Iyama beat Yang Dingxin of China and advanced to the semifinal of the LG Cup. The game is given below.

Re: YACHT Diary
I don't know what it is about the tsuke-nobi, but it doesn't appeal to me either way. Playing it myself, it feels so heavy. Playing against it, it feels so massive. However, I've only just begun looking into the push and cut variation - especially here after 16, it might have been useful to support ...

Re: YACHT Diary
Hello everybody,
it's been a while since I last posted something into my diary. Somehow, I just didn't find the time to keep posting, which doesn't actually mean that I stopped playing and learing.
I've now reached 8k EGF, mostly by regularly attending the local club, reading books and doing the ...

P.S. the ending of that game was strange. Shin seemingly blundered and played his own ko threat without answering Zhou's larger one and retaking the ko first
Are you referring to White 298 (K13)? I obviously don't have much of a clue but doesn't this seem like "Looking for a place to resign ...

[2017-05-07] 1st ENN Cup, round 4
Zhou Ruiyang 9p (Black) vs. Shin Jinseo 8p (White) B+R
That's funny. I was just browsing over this game on Go4go and thought I'd go and recommend it on here.
I recalled that you labeled Black's play at the bottom as AlphaGo-esque in your comments of your ...

Re: U.S. Federal judge allows media to report Chess WC moves
I did some more reading and saw it was mentioned a few times that there are certain types of positions (don't remember which ones) the computers are not confortable with, i. e. that their judgement could not really be trusted when such positions arise. Maybe I misunderstood, but if not, I find it ...

Re: U.S. Federal judge allows media to report Chess WC moves
As a side note, there was a move played by Carlsen in game 10 (move 62 I think) which wasn't considered the best move by engines, some people started calling it a blunder, or at least saying that Carlsen lost a bit of his advantage, but it seems that after it was played engines suddenly went crazy ...
