I think the fact that Elephants can't cross rivers, Horse can't leap over pieces and the Advisors (and General) having such limited movement options make the game quite a bit slower and less brutal than western chess. But again, it may be me speaking as a beginner in both games.

Xiangqi seems like a good casual chess game. The perks of a slower pace and limited movement make it a nice alternative to western chess while still being familiar enough (no capture mechanic like in shogi). Funny, I like xiangqi because to me it's a nice, structured chess game. At least compared to western chess that has more powerful pieces. Haven't tried shogi yet. I got xiangqi and my hugely competitive roommate got shogi, so I haven't arsed myself to try yet.

When I was taught the basics years ago I don't remember discussing the scoring system in much depth. I have been under the impression that you count the territory and captured stones after both players forfeit their moves successively.

In all levels of go play, but perhaps games in 19x19 particular, how do people keep up with the number of points held by both players during the game? Or do people just agree to stop the game before it progresses "too far" (as in, more area and captured stones to calculate than is comfortable)? In ...
