Re: Lost points from mid to end game

One thing that pops up when I watch this game is this: small knights can be cut :) I notice that black has a tendency to play a small knight and white almost always immediately cuts it off.

Re: How AI study has helped me

Why the diagonal for :w24: instead of a jump? Has it anything to do with your shape or is it to be able to attack the black group more severely later on (potentially)? Or something else?

Murdered by 2 dan

Hello!

I saw an open challenge by a 2 dan and I didn't want to pass up on an opportunity to play a stronger player.
I got pretty much steamrolled over though. So I was wondering what the big mistakes were. I especially want to hear about whole board thinking. Feedback on my reading won't be as ...

Re: A sound spanking

Love how polite and friendly you are playing online. Even when the guy is not answering. Kudos to you and good attitude to be grateful to play a stronger player instead of being mad by being "cheated" by a sandbagger. Keep that positive attitude :)

1001 Life & Death (Richard Bozulich)
Finished the first 100 problems in the book. I do one or two pages every day. Here are my results:

99/100 Correct solutions
50% I saw the correct answer within 3 seconds (rough estimate)
35% I saw two or three strong candidates and I needed some more time to ...

Re: Ian Butler's Go Journal

ramble about hobbies and whatnot
I've reread a part of this journal just now. Hadn't realized it's been so long since I made that commitment to study the Tesuji book. I guess I dropped the ball fairly soon after that last post in December last year. With covid and all, I have turned quite a lot of ...

Re: Kyu game: some proud moments and some questions :)

I am assuming you were black, hope that is correct.

Questionable direction of play:
:b11: should play Q3 before threatening to connect, otherwise white may play there.
:b27: the bottom side is not so big, I think jumping to E16 is better.
:b31: the corner is big
:b37: the corner is still big
:b47 ...

You are probably right. I let white get away with too much there I guess :) thanks!

Re: Ian Butler's Go Journal

Thank you, knotwilg, for you input. I appreciate you taking the effort to put it in human terms, because I wouldn't presume to understand what the robots try to tell me anyway

I understand that 18 til 26 is fairly small. It looks very small in hindsight. I am surprised you feel as though 22 ...

Kyu game: some proud moments and some questions :)

My first "real" game in months was against this guy, and I misread a ladder (sorry Kageyama), but fortunately he wanted a rematch! This time I was black. Especially since I haven't played for so long, i'm pretty happy with my play for once. Sure you can find a million and one mistakes, but for my ...

Re: Ian Butler's Go Journal

I reckon it's been months since I played. And yet since buying a house with my brother and him getting into Go as well, we've been playing 13x13 every day for a few days now. And I found myself finding a 19x19 game online. Just for some Sunday fun.
And what do you know, Kageyama was right: Ladders ...

where did I mess up?

I just played on of those games where you're left not feeling very good about the game.
I made some stupid reading mistakes ( :w44: :w46: I don't know why I was imagining having a magical extra liberty that I obviously didn't have) but I think I recuperated well and by :w76: I thought I had a won ...

Re: David (9 kyu) vs Goliath (1 dan)

Thanks so much for your input, gennan. It's interesting, on some points you say the opposite of my opponent in the review, so it's interesting to remember Go is hard, and even (a lot) stronger players can see things very different.
:b21: I liked in the game, mainly because it was the result of much ...

David (9 kyu) vs Goliath (1 dan)

A new year, another 365 days to play and learn Go.
To start the year, I had the fortune of finding a game against an OGS 1-dan player. I'm not gonna pass up an opportunity to play against such a strong opponent and we even reviewed a little bit.
I tried to play my A-game, obviously, and I think I ...

Re: Follow the wise old men - and solve problems faster

I sometimes find that the diagram with the final position is disturbing because it's hard to visualize an intermediate position, i.e. it's harder to mentally remove stones from the final position than to add them from the initial position.

I share that sentiment. If I need to go back to the ...
