Re: Review Request for Direction of Play

yeah, i reckon the direction of play in the opening/mid game was fine. It was the reading of life and death status of groups that lost you the game.

The contact fights between groups on the right side of the board. I think you played away before the situation was settled.

So urgent before big is ...

Re: How does everybody else avoid weaknesses?

I've put in some comments in the SGF up to move 57, how to deal with those overplays.

The main thing is to surround the opponent if they invade, make them live small and the influence you get is worth so much more so early in the game.
It wont make points straight away but eventually it will be ...

Re: Think and Grow Strong

Hi,

I would recommend 3dan Tygem for a 1kyu KGS, which is the same ranks i have on those servers.
I presume Fox is about equivalent to Tygem ranks from what I've heard. Or start at 2dan to be conservative.

There is a GoPanda2 client for IGS which is quite nice, no one plays byo-yomi though. I do ...

Re: how to stop being tired

that happened to me in my mid/late 30's, 5 years later still tired.
set my expectations lower helps a little.
trying to build good habits, healthy eating, exercise, meditation, enjoy nature. but still tired.
emotional baggage/stress can take its toll without realising.
i guess just accept it and ...

Re: my silly thoughts about wich pro players to study

Just a few ramblings...

I was intent on studying Yoo Chang-hyuk's games because he plays for influence and attacks, so it was recommended to learn from this style how to use influence.
At the time I looked at some of his games but did not understand. They looked just like any other pro players ...

Re: nasdaq journal

Well I was playing quite a lot with Leela Zero the first half of the year. Taking even games on fairly low playouts using a 10block Master version from pangafu.

I do enjoy playing on a real board and being able to take as much time as I want, no time pressure or having to play at a good tempo for ...

Re: First 19x19 game...brutal.

thanks for posting, i had forgotten what it was like to be a beginner.

wow, it was like the whole board was free with wild abandon or some kind of free jazz drummer.

makes me think about the fundamentals of how to play the game as in: we each have our own unique style, "greedy", "cautious", etc ...

Re: Chinese Problem Books

The weiqi life and death drills, even the first book of the 3 are dan level, but really good problems involving tesuji, but also just plain reading exercises to the find the good move.

1000 is good, i've done the l&d section. Not too hard but all at a consistent level low kyu would be good.

The ...

Re: Have you ever cheated at go?

In correspondence games I think its 'normal' to look up joseki and play out sequences on a board etc. though using an AI bot would be crossing my moral line.

Doing undo's against a bot is something i've done when there was a chance i could win. It's not something I like doing though. I guess it ...

Re: Have you ever cheated at go?

Confession time.

i did.

It was about 10 years ago in an important online game.

I looked up a joseki because I couldn't remember the line, and I wasn't confident in reading it out.

The joseki turned out ok but the game i lost.

Karma...

Re: Zhao Baolong 2p played Leela Zero on consumer-grade hard

wow, no idea it was that strong on only a few thousand playouts!

I did beat it a couple of times using the best 10x128 network on about 100 playouts.

One game was a bad ladder.

The other was a large capture race that leela zero could have won easily if it connected, but because of the size of the ...
