I am not sure if this is what OP is trying to say, but from what I understand is that when kataGo (or any AI) says you are "ahead by 20" - do they mean "points" as we, humans, understand "points"? Or not? If yes, no worries. If no, this might hurt people using this metric to evaluate errors.

Re: reviewing SL articles using LZ and criticism
If the old idea seems totally wrong (e.g. it's always good to invade 3-3 early), then maybe it's worth getting rid of the page(?).
I would be careful here. My idea is to absolutely keep the page, but maybe provide a disclaimer with a link to the page that refutes the idea.

I am always suspicious when confronted with this kinds of arguments. LZ says something is 10% better... so what? What does it mean? WHY is it 10% better, what is the IDEA behind making it so? Is it only better because LZ can prune the tree (or whatever LZ does) in a way humans will never be ...

Also note KataGo calls a 2 point mistake a 10% hit to your winrate!
Not sure how significant it is. When I play equally-skilled player, most mistakes will even out, and those which do not, will decide the game - no matter how large they are. If I play against a hypothetical perfect player, even 1 ...

No clue. But I would not be surprised if it depended on the pro.hydrogenpi7 wrote:anyone tried? cannot find any youtube videos on this

Re: Importance of a goal?
I've never had an identifiable goal as a go player, beyond a vague desire to be better than I was during my last game. On the other hand, I can understand the rationale of using a goal to drive your own growth as a player. My question is this; Is having a goal worth the risk of losing what you ...

Hi Zenity. First of all, let me say that honestly applaud your efforts and wish you and the new server all the best.
But - since you asked for comments and critique, and since the server is in very early phases at the moment - I decided not really to talk about it feature-by-feature but ...

Re: Why are "pre-researched" moves looked down upon?
Trick plays can be insulting. Not all, but many are of the variety of "I'm playing a move that I know is objectively wrong because I think you're too stupid to answer properly".
Hmm... If this is what you think, lemme ask you a question? Did you ever fall for a trick play? I bet you have... and ...

Re: Why are "pre-researched" moves looked down upon?
So, my advice is - play moves you understand the idea behind.
To which may I add this advice: Play moves you do not understand in order to increase your understanding of them. :)
Heh... I like it. Point taken.
Maybe I should have voiced it as follows instead:

Re: Why are "pre-researched" moves looked down upon?
I guess, it's the same story as with studying the opening in chess.
You will get a higher rating short term because you will get a lot of "build order" wins. The downside comes when you start to rely on people playing the "wrong move" and when you stop thinking (reading) for yourself.

Re: Verdict on AI verdicts on old pros
When I was first learning to play go I was, as probably many of us were, told that greedy play was bad. When weak players play greedily against a stronger player, the greedy player often loses. I was also told that go is a game of balance and if you try to keep your opponent from getting anything ...

Re: Ultimate tie break for three way tie
I feel at this point we are just arguing for the sake of arguing. So let me just restate my objections and then bow out of the thread.
I think Matti's proposal is bad because:
1> The tie-breaker is not based on skill and/or performance, and
2> It might/will influence the gams too much.
If we don't ...

Re: Ultimate tie break for three way tie
How many rounds do you find good enough?
I don't really care, to be honest - we can certainly agree on some number. Will probably be based on the resources we have (time, location, etc) and the input from organizers.
So lets say - up to 3 rounds then we draw straws. Or solve tsume-go puzzles. The ...

Re: Ultimate tie break for three way tie
Oh... I forgot. And if we want something like penalty kicks in soccer to be a tiebreaker - we can get them to solve go problems and see who does it faster. This might be a good alternative, corresponding to penalty kicks. Just sayin....
