Hi.

I used to post under this account some time ago, even when it had a different name, then stopped for a while, then started an account using my real name. I knew it was a violation of the Forum Rules, but I guess I felt that going from psuedonym to real wasn't the type of violation that the rules ...

Re: Modern professionals. Underrated?

At some point may be possible to attempt an analysis of the strength of historical players using computers, similar to what has been done in chess.

Analyses such as the above suffer from the "outrunning the bear" problem: a player who knows his opponent---as many historical players did---does not ...

Re: Is using help in online games always cheating?

The chess world has sailed past this, to the extent that cyborg matches involving GM human+machine exist: m

Whether assistance is cheating or not depends on whether everyone involved agrees on a specific set of rules. A venue (such as a server) may try to stipulate such rules, but they are hard to ...

Re: "Mukai Komoku" (double 3-4) Fuseki

The top is obviously the most open area and the usual idea with :b5: is that you should wait before approaching it until you know which direction is best. So I think your move at 'a' is proper. Depending on how the top develops you can then decide what to do at the bottom.

Re: 3,997 Hours to go

I think Dan is doing just fine with his 6,000 hours to be in the top 5% of golfers who have a handicap in a country where golf is very popular. Consider being in the top 5% of rated baduk players in Korea. Anyone able to do that---especially starting later in life than the elites did---that's not ...

Re: Shape for DDKs -- and thickness, too!

Imagine two lines, one white, one Black, of three stones facing each other a space apart somewhere away from the edge. Each line of stones has six sujiba, and three of them are shared.

The basic premise is that it is inefficient to play on a sujiba, so if you look at a completed position and see ...

I am based on the U.S. West Coast, but have been to a number of U.S. Go Congresses. In the U.S. I have participated in tournaments where the rules are stated AGA, stated Ing, stated Chinese, stated Japanese or unstated until someone asks. That is the context of my experience in addition to club play ...

He was fortunate to have lived long enough to receive not just his Nobel, but also the Abel Prize, which I'd suspect is something he'd personally have regarded even more highly.

Re: The Great Improvement plan (Focus on Dan-level)

First thing I am going to try is something I saw posted here in L19 some time ago. A Japanese professional player recommended solving go problems in your head right before bed. It would be nice if someone can provide a link to the article.

I think you are referring to the thread New Tsume-go ...

I like them all. I wish more players would submit videos. The medium seems more personable than the written interviews we have seen in the past.

I like the varied backgrounds: the Turkish rep seems to be either in or near an elevator, the Malaysian kid who seems to be an plane, Cornel skiing ...

Trying to fix this while you are doing it may be like trying to paint the inside of your house through the letterbox on the front door. I'm not saying you can't do it if you are a good enough painter, but...

Well, I can make one meager suggestion, which works if you play online: use a screen ...
