I had 2x 1600w PSUs connected. The 3080s varied (FE, Zotac, and MSI) but none touched 500watts and typically hovered around 300-350 with occasional spikes over 400 even with Nicehash running. The 3090 (Asus Strix) was 350-400 with rare spikes over 500 but never over 550.
Note the spikes are really ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
Hooked up two PSUs, tried running 1x3090 and 3x3080 on an X299 board with risers. I also plugged in an old 2060 super and 5700xt in eGPU units as well. I just wanted to make sure the setup could run stably if I could feed it enough power.

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
Thunderbolt does not slow down mining at all as far as I could tell, at least with the ehtereum mining algorithms Nicehash has been running since like November last year. Mining in an eGPU is still slightly less efficient because the eGPU unit itself draws more power, but it's really not much, like ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
I think I found my solution. It's a bit frankenstein but should work. I'll swap the motherboard on my Intel machine to a MB with 3xPCIex16 slots and a thunderbolt 3 port. I'll then put the 3090 on top and a 3080 at the bottom and attach an eGPU enclosure with 3080 to the thunderbolt 3 port. In the ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
I got some early and just kept picking them up when I found them. One of the 3080s is from stockx.com for $1200+taxes.

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
I went ahead and tested 1x3090 + 3x3080 on a test bench (aka motherboard's box and my desk). I had to use risers to get them to fit on an X299 board. They were all 3 PCI slots tall and just didn't physically fit on the board without the risers.
The setup just wasn't stable with a 1600w PSU. It ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
For what it's worth, I tried the config with 3090s. They are so thick even with two slots in between, there is very little clearance and they still overheated. EVGA and Zotac 3080s also overheated on top. The founder's edition 3080 was the only one that didn't throttle a lot when put on top but even ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
No. I mean MBs with 4 PCIe (at least) 8x slots with at least 2 that are at least 2 slots apart. For example, if I get a 7 PCI-E slot X299 board, I could put 3 cards on Top, 4th, and then 7th, and have quite a bit of clearance between the cards. One of the cards will probably be confined to PCI-e x 8 ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
The 4 card dream is dead. I looked into it and, without resorting to a mining rig, custom water cooling loop is all but necessary and that drives the cost of the system to pretty close to 20k, if not more, if I wanted warranty of some kind from a custom builder.

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
I'm using the Lian-Li O11D-XL. The orientations are kind of weird.
3 intakes at bottom blowing directly on the GPU (sadly only on bottom GPU)
3 intakes on side
3 exhausts on top
1 exhaust on the back
The orientations of the fans really aren't ideal since they aren't helping to push hot air out ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
I had 3090 and 3080 next to each other. There was definitely a cm of space but the temp was just out of control. It was in a big Lian Li o11d-xl case too with 6 intake fans and 4 exhaust fans.

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
Hi guys,
I am looking to build a rig with 2, maybe even 3, 3080s or 3090s to run LeelaZero/KataGo. However, when I tried stacking a 3090 and 3080, the 3090 on top just choked on hot air so much it thermal throttled ridiculously.
