Re: Capture race in Shotwell

black must play as below,

Ah, right, that's what the text says, black must play as you show, and the variation is given to show why. I.e. if black plays some other way, it must be black that gets hurt. So the text really should say "Black dies"!

Hey, there is hope! I might start understanding ...

Re: books, shipping costs and other observations

I've been working through Graded Go Problem vol 2 and mostly I can understand the answers but not always. It feels like it's about the right level for me - hard enough but not impossible.

Is there a recommended place and style here for discussions about specific problems in books? One topic per ...

kukula 2-0 noodley

Game 1: noodley(w) 22.5-35.0 kukula
Game 2: kukula 31.5-18.0 noodley

(noodley resigned game 1 but it looked settled and that was the score at the end)

Re: If I have to buy ONLY 1 book...

Why isn't A16 a second eye for the white group, so that white can live no matter what happens in the corner?

I mentioned to a friend that I've been playing Go lately & he replied that he would like to learn. I pointed him to the KGS site. I was just going through the tutorial myself - it's ...

Re: Increasing patience

There are different types of patience:

Putting up with other people's abuse.

Putting up with hardship in working to achieve something substantial.

To put up with abuse, it might help to think about how people who abuse others are actually caught up in confusion that ultimately will harm them a ...

Re: The First Forum Double Digit Kyu Tourney

if white played 28 one space to the right, it adds to his liberties while giving black less holes to push through.

Somehow that stupid move felt clever at the time! I was worried about black running along the edge. But he wouldn't have had the liberty to do that.

Well, beginners make beginner ...

Re: The First Forum Double Digit Kyu Tourney

Not sure I understood the format for recording matches, but here is a report.

kukula vs. TominNJ

Game1: kukula(black) won by 22.5 points (the score computed was 17.5 but I had a komi of .5 instead of 5.5 so 22.5 is correct, right?)

Game2: kukula(white) won by TominNJ resigning. Maybe that 5.5 ...

And I don't seem to be able to adjust the Komi either. It is stuck at 6.5 - dim letters & can't get the cursor into that space.

Thanks!
