What can Black do afterwards? There is O13 (d). So White will probably have to somehow defend here now. After a few exchanges Black can play F17 or something, but has probably gained a few more stones facing the upper side and/or the lower centre.
If Black played A (a) instead, White is under far ...

Re: LG Cup 29 final fiasco
If you followed the game, then you can tell where stones are buried. I am not confident that I can avoid off-by-one errors with that, though.
But at the end of the game, you can do button scoring: remember whether White passed first, then do area scoring, and if White passed first, add 1 to White's ...

Re: PGETC with Skype
For me, it's rather hypothetical too, as I'm not participating in any online playing right now.
But I have been somewhat involved in discussions and measures to detect and prevent cheating before, so I have ruminated this a bit.
My view can perhaps be summarized like this:

Re: Japanese Castle Games questions
- 之 seems to be the particle nowadays always written just の (no)
That particle seems to be the one in "gen mata gen". And while I can see a "mystery's mystery" I've always seen it translated as "mystery behind / beyond / after mystery".
That would still fit. の isn't just possessive either.

Re: Japanese Castle Games questions
Other people are probably much more qualified than I am to try some translation, but according to my limited knowledge:
- 十二月十五日 is Decembre 15th
- 井上道砂因硕 is Inoue Dōsa Inseki
- 本因坊 is Honinbo
The rest of that sentence is probably too old-style for me.
- 前 is »before«, »in front of« (pronounced ...

Thanks to xela for the »spinning top« metaphor!

Re: One color go in the Judan avoided by speedy referee
Could you try to provide an illustrative example?
For example: I have witnessed several times how players ignore that their opponent has run out of time in byouyomi.

Re: One color go in the Judan avoided by speedy referee
Regarding myself as European, I object to the notion that we somehow see fair play as »alien«. On the contrary, at least in my life-long experience, it is a very central concept that most people e. g. here in Germany feel quite strongly about. Of course, there are the occasional exceptions, but you ...

I'm not sure if I understand correctly: do you mean the known maximum or the maximum known? I. e. do we know that there cannot be more, or is it just the largest found yet?

Re: Are we studying the wrong things?
I think that when trying to find a good move (with a lot of time to spend on that), people, especially pros, do take their opponent's options into account. I'd guess that they even take their opponent's intent into account, as that seems to be a prerequisite for kiai in the sense of countering the ...
