Re: AI Study

Neural For the AI researcher, both the possibly more complicated but correct move and the simpler but possibly suboptimal move are interesting besides explanations why one is better and observations how much the other loses.

Only few lines are obscure or rely on spectacular tesujis. From a high ...

Re: AI Study

The basics of study with Katago concern calibration with komi, numbers of playouts, precision of values

NUMBERS OF PLAYOUTS
Usually, Katago frequently changes its mind about the relative orders of top move candidates if the number of playouts per top move candidate is smaller than 100,000 ...

Re: useful or interesting facts

I am a little confused about the topic. MFOG 12 is not a pre MCTS program. You have to go back to MFOG 11 for that. I believe MFOG 12 uses its rules to pick candidate moves, and then MCTS to choose thebest of these. That's MFOG 12 at its highest settings. At lower settings uses just rules (and ca ...

Re: Best engine without monte carlo playouts or AlphaGo meth

Perhaps the (open source) GNU Go engine is the strongest engine before MCTS. The latest version is from 2009 and it may be about 6k KGS.

Do not forget the (non-open source) Many Faces of Go and Go++ . They were also that strength. Look at the computer go tournaments of that period.

Note also ...

Re: Best engine without monte carlo playouts or AlphaGo meth

Prior to introduction of Monte Carlo methods, the best of the rule based programs were at about 6 kyu.

a) And THAT level of play including :randomize" so not always responding in exactly the same move.
b) And at least one of these could be asked "why" (what were the go principles used to choose ...

Not having a say in EGF affairs, but want to comment on something I haven't seen raised.

Being able to see your opponent (and be seen in return) reintroduces elements of face to face play beyond empathy. It is potentially a source of information about the game itself. Some of us have good "poker ...

That does make it difficult/impossible to judge the software.

HOWEVER ... developments in hardware are not irrelevant. these programs are using neural nets, and the neural nets are emulated by programs running on processors not originally designed for the purpose. Development of hardware more ...

Re: Engine Tournament

And with computers, not absolute time but time and hardware.

We really are going to have to come to some agreement about those. What will be considered a "standard machine" and what "standard time controls.

And what sort of time controls? Allowing X per move is simple but I believe we will ...

Re: Best program and net for: MacBook Pro 16-inch M3 MAX?

At what time control?

Can't really ask what program is best unless the average amount of time per move is known. Whatever program is used, you'd wnt it to have enough analysis time (on this machine) so it won;t make silly moves. And that amount of time is going to be different programs on this ...

Re: KataGo's play

Robert, I sent that PM not to personally get that information but to suggest that you add it to this discussion.

Time (real time) per move is relevant. We are discussing a very high level of play so it is reasonable to compare the average amount of time per move with that of humans playing at that ...

Re: Where to buy Go stones in Ukraine? Could someone advice

Hello, many sites not sent go sets and boards to Ukraine, maybe someone know a couple site? (would be better if price will be nearly 100-200$ for Yunzi, Shell and Slate, Agate and Onix or less than 100$ for glass go stone)

Again, not in itself a solution. But we need to know more for possible ...

North Korea was ahead of South Korea.

I hope for the day the whole world counts age from conception as in Judaic culture. It is the only scientifically justifiable age counting system.

UH --- Judaic culture counts age from BIRTH, not conception. Perhaps you meant some other culture that ...

Except --- low rankings of young players can be deceptive. Regardless of how strong a young player might be in absolute terms, it will take time for them to win promotion.

I picked THOSE particular examples for a reason.

It was felt, at the time, that Alexander had the potential to develop into a much stronger player. But clearly his job at Bletchley Park took priority.
