Re: New GoGoD database update issued
A game by Demis Hassabis was published in the British Go Journal a long time ago (maybe 30 years+). I forget why. He was definitely not very strong then.

How can you tell? Perhaps they hide their skills because they're so much better than humans and don't want to demonstrate that to show off?hanspi wrote:I disagree, of course. Bonobos don't play Go.Elom0 wrote:Bonobos are superior to homosapiens in every way possible that matters

Re: Another Rule Dispute
I will never fail to be amazed at the fact that relevant area hasn't been defined in a ruleset used by professionals
But all professionals "know" what is meant so it doesn't need further clarification!
I suspect that rule-expert professionals don't though. Changing rules is a cultural thing, not ...

Re: Go World, Go Review -- OK, maybe I'm asking too much!
I know it has been a while, but are the copies of Go Review Monthly still available? I'm interested.
I'm also interested in a select few of the Go World magazines, but am unlikely to want the whole run.
Thank you!
If you can't get what you want from John Tilley then I may be able to help. I'll ...

Re: EGC 2023 Ukraine
It's far too soon to make such a determination.
They need to wait at least 3 months to evaluate the situation and probably ought to wait until the AGM in July before making any decision.
Of course, one would hope that planning for an alternative location takes place in parallel with any decision ...

I thought it used to be quite common when in Japanese 30/60 second byoyomi to play a forcing move or two so that you had enough time to count up the score accurately.
Is this not another example of using the clock as part of the game?

I believe we had drug testing at the World Mind Sports Games in 2008 in Beijing. Certainly we signed up for it, as did the other games taking part as part of IMSA - I don't know whether any testing actually took place.

Re: AI making us lazy?
It is my belief that AI bots (or at least pros who follow bots) play to have the initiative, and don't really care who has next move. They want sente = control, not sente = next move. Control in go is probably definable not as who has next move, but where the next move will be played, by either ...

Re: Overcome the wall or give up
Whilst striving to get better is good, and I'd advise just playing through professional games (commentary isn't needed) on a real board (don't use software that clicks to get the next move) to improve your feel for what is the correct move, at some stage you'll reach a barrier which you can't break ...

Re: Conway's Game of Life
A lecture from Conway on surreal numbers with an intro on how watching people playing Go in the maths department inspired him. He mentions the British champion bringing a board along, presumably you Jon?
