Re: Go Basics: Concepts and Strategies for New Players

I absolutely recommend a problem book or two (or three...). Graded Go Problems for Beginners volumes 1 & 2 are probably perfect for you.

Yes, I've been working out of the first book for the last week. I've reached the third section in it, and the problems are becoming noticeably more difficult ...

Re: Go Basics: Concepts and Strategies for New Players

At 29k all you need to do is play, play and play some more. Reading books is time wasted not playing.

Yes, I understand that this is the prevailing opinion, but I'm afraid it doesn't work like that for me. And, in any case, to play I have to be at home. But I can't be home all of the time. I have ...

Go Basics: Concepts and Strategies for New Players

I was wondering if anyone had read this book and how they felt about it. I'm a natural book collector in addition to everything else, so I tend to pick up new Go books when they're available (since they go out of print so quickly), even ones for elementary players (I figure reviewing the basics ...

Re: Recording games

I have a real kifu book I got in China, so I sort of feel obliged to use it (didn't need it for a year but will definitely use it at the tournament in September).
I didn't find it terribly difficult or distracting. On the other hand I did screw up majorly, such as writing 62 instead of 72 and never ...

Re: Rules for handicap games

Just out of interest, in New Zealand rules handicap games have no komi and white simply passes the first n-1 moves, where n is the handicap, which can be very harsh if you don't have a prior agreement to take the "normal" points...

Also, I agree with Harleqin, if you don't *need* a winner (like in ...

Re: Zar's Study Journal

Doing tsumego will pay off. Learning them until you immediately know the solution (even if you turn the book upside down) is a good way to get knowledge.

Which tsumego are you doing exactly? Online tsumego or from a book? Which one?

Both, actually. I'm almost done with the first book of Graded ...

Re: Zar's Study Journal

Another good way to get over some hurdles is to join us in the GoDiscussions.com room on KGS. I know, speaking for myself, that if you had questions or wanted some advice on a game, if I'm online I am usually willing to try and help out. I'm sure that a number of us all enjoy doing a bit of ...

Re: Zar's Study Journal

Hey, good luck with your go journey. It's easy to get down, especially during a losing streak, but hey, with time and effort you get better...

Thanks. I don't intend to quit. The thing is, I don't mind losing so much.... If I thought that I'd actually put up an adequate defense or made decent ...

Zar's Study Journal

Sometimes I get utterly discouraged about ever improving at Go. Like today. My last couple of games have been embarrassing, really. And it's not because I don't understand what I SHOULD be doing. I'm one of those people who understands theory all over the place, but when it comes to application, I ...

Is there an English version? Because I can't read this website.

Re: Recording games

When I record kifu of my games, I do it the way Kaga tells Shindou to do it in Hikaru no Go: for black stones, simply write the move number with a black pen, and for white stones, write the move number with a red pen. I find that this makes it very easy to see the board position and to follow the ...

Recording games

Earlier today I posted two photos of games I had played earlier this morning. I noted that I hadn't recorded them, so there was no way to elaborate on exactly what happened on the board. That said...

I do have some blank recording sheets, I believe, and I'm wondering what the best way to do that ...
