Re: Beautiful bowls - Who made them?

Those are nice indeed. My guess is that they are mulberry, possibly from Mikura or Miyake Island. Lovely!
Do you see a lot of this kind of thing on Yahoo Japan?

Re: Floor Goban help choice

Hope I haven't breached some forum protocol, I just thought it was a decent deal on ebay. I have absolutely no affiliation with the seller. But I bet this kit would cost a lot more if bought directly from KGT.

Re: Floor Goban help choice

Here is a very fine offering on eBay, and a pretty good value if you don't mind buying used.

Re: Favorite gosu?

I've seen a few bowls from KGT that are roughly cylindrical, or with slightly concave sides. I would guess that Mr. Kuroki could supply all kinds of custom appointments...at a price.

Re: Favorite gosu?

I'm sorry, I don't know what "GoSeigen style bowls" means. Maybe it is a shape of wood turning? I believe that the wood was harvested from the "Izu Seven," probably Mikurajima or Miyakejima, and that the timber is a specific species of mulberry found on those particular volcanic islands off the ...

Pretty -- do they work well with Size 38 stones?

No, these will only hold stones up to size 35, but the stones are thick enough for me. I like the plain aesthetic and clean lines of the grain in these bowls.

Re: Favorite gosu?

I am happily persuaded by whatever the well regarded merchants in Japan will agree to sell me. Thus far, I have not been disappointed, as they accommodate my stones in a utilitarian, yet fashionable manner.

Re: Hyuga-kaya: What is special about it?

if you want to use a kaya board as an investment it would be wise not to play on it. Dents and other signs of use are inevitable and would affect the value negatively. The market for investment quality boards would mostly be in Japan.

I would wholeheartedly agree, there would be little or no ...

Re: Hyuga-kaya: What is special about it?

Pricing and desirability is not only a matter of the highest quality but also of rarity and demand from the market which in the case of hyuga kaya is much much higher than for honkaya boards...

That is why I ordered the best honkaya board that Mr. Kuroki had to offer (in my price range.) The ...

Re: Hyuga-kaya: What is special about it?

I'll chime in here, as I am one of those unfortunate persons who is somewhat interested in what makes nice things particularly nice, and I suffer from the prices that those things fetch - heavy copper french pots and pans might be an example, as they rapidly respond to changes in heat and in doing ...

Re: Floor goban leg sizes

Here are a few dimensions from my KGT kaya floor board.

Total height of board with legs - 12.4"

Projection from bottom of board - 4.68" from bottom of board. (They are slightly inset into the bottom of the board, so maybe add 1/8 or so if you plan to inset the legs.)

Setback from endgrain ...

Re: The Go Stone

I humbly propose my half century of woodworking observations regarding the parallax "myth." Imagine, if you will, a go board which has the same rectangular dimensions, but with the grain of the wood going in the other direction, i.e. wider on the end grain, (left to right,) and shorter in the ...

With the Mikura Island Mulberry pen from Sailor, the "Shima Kuwa," you can record your greatest victories in style, (for the price of a nice kaya go board.)

Mine didn't come with the plastic. Maybe I could get some and see what it's like.
