Re: Major new article on go in German
I doubt Edward Lasker said this (or reported it). His books are pretty brief, they're all in English as far as I know, there are multiple reports about him published in English from friends who knew him personally, and according to the AGA they've all been pored over and no one can find the quote ...

Re: Japanese pro earnings 2024
Surprised Yamashita is doing better than Shibano. No one is surprised that Ichiriki and Iyama are #1 and #2, but I would have guessed those two play Shibano more often than anyone else besides each other.

Re: Harsh penalty for using phone
One factor that seems to weigh heavily in the minds of these associations is whether the person who is cheating has the potential to develop into a top-level champion. I sympathize more with the zero-tolerance policy, but there seems to be a serious reluctance in many nations/sports to lower the ...

Re: New servers and marketing
When you start a new web/tech business it's pretty typical to subcontract the design of the actual website/landing page out to a web designer, who rather than designing a new site from scratch à la 1999 will use a template that, for god knows what reason, all start-ups use these days. ~3 tabs at the ...

Re: Risa Ueno, 7th World Senko cup
It's a pretty impressive win if you go by the normal metrics, almost miraculous... in theory at least the players Choi routinely beats should be stronger than who Ueno can beat in Japan. But perhaps the international rating system for women isn't as well-calibrated as the men's.

Re: LG Cup 29 final fiasco
The KBA has bowed to pressure from the CWA to the extent of softening the rule. Now, apparently, repeated violations of the rule will only result in further point penalties.

Re: LG cup final game 2 forfeit by Ke Jie
What I heard is that in the final game, the referees noticed the violation on Byun's time and stopped the clock to discuss the violation, and Ke Jie objected to the fact that Byun would have unlimited time to think about the board position and refused to continue the game, or something like that ...

Re: What's in a name?
I can't imagine that it really matters, but I don't think you guys are grasping that the umbrella festival/whatever, of which the weiqi tournament is a small part, is the "International Child-Friendly Exchange", referencing efforts to make the city of Quzhou more child-friendly. This is "child ...

Re: What's in a name?
It's a little bit of an unusual concept, but it may really be intended as "International Child-Friendly Amateur Invitational Weiqi Tournament"... there is in fact a UN/Unicef program pushing the concept of child-friendly cities, and this concept has been central to Quzhou's urban development ...

Re: ### 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Go Championship
I think Mike is likely right. While I don't know know if this is true of top Go AIs specifically, in AI in general there are some programs designed to work optimally with custom processor chips (I think this is Google's approach?) and many that use standard Nvidia GPUs. There are also differences in ...

Ichiriki won by resignation on move 237 with 55 minutes left on his clock, so I don't think he needed a time penalty
