Jan van der Steen passed away
Jan van der Steen passed away last week at the age of 64. He was active in the go community for over four decades and made it to a 3 dan rank. He was the founder of gobase.org and 321go.org, two sites which helped many people learn the game and get stronger. He will be sorely missed

Re: Pairings against (Belo)russian players
A player participating in a tournament can know, in advance, what the conditions for participation are. If the tournament requires a statement against the war, they can choose to make that statement or choose not to participate. A player cannot, however, know in advance what conditions other ...

Re: Pairings against (Belo)russian players
The EGF meeting has decided that (Belo)russian players may participate in European tournaments under neutral flag.
This gives rise to follow-up questions:
1) In tournaments without flags, does "neutral flag" mean "neutral country in pairing programs, pairings and results?
I guess so.
2) Is it ...

I have this one: https://online-go.com/game/41383743lightvector wrote:I seem to remember seeing a construction sort of like this that achieved tens of thousands of moves somewhere on the internet, but it was many years ago and I don't know how to find it again.

Re: Broken ladder games
The following is an article from the GoGoD Encylopaedia which lists various interesting ladder situations. The formatting is lost in the transfer here, and you will need the GoGoD database for the games, but I don't think you'll find a bigger XXXX of ladders.

Re: Fujisawa Rina - First Female Victory in JP Mixed Tourney
Still, I may make Rina's achievement the reason for my annual tot of whisky (outside Hogmanay) tonight. There's not been much else to celebrate this year and it's soon drawing to a close. If others care to join me, shall we say 10pm GMT (23 November)? My own tipple is Dalwhinnie's Winter's Gold ...

Re: Derived Metrics for the Game of Go
The paper says: "Every move played in a game reduces the number of its future possibilites." Unless a superko or similar rule applies, this is just a conjecture and disproven by this counter-example: White's two-eye-formation fills the board, White fills an eye, Black passes, White fills an eye ...

Quick correction here: Privately organized means organized by a private entity as opposed to organized by by a public entity (the government).
To quote one definition: "Private entity" means any entity that is not a unit of government, including but ...

Re: strange seki
I think Bill makes a good point. In theory, to play superko you need to memorize every board position that has occurred in the current game. An easy task for a computer, an impossibility for humans.
So that's not what we do. In practice, we recognize that there a certain patterns that create ...

Re: Go AI World Championship 2020
Seems this tournament used a variation of button go.
According to Sensei's Library (https://senseis.xmp.net/?2020WorldArtificialIntelligenceGoCompetition) the scoring rule is:
6. Chinese rules, komi is 3.25 stones but if white passes first it's 3.75.
This is similar to WMSG rules in 2008 (https ...

Re: Martian problem
Given how the rules have been applied, the verb "to possess" in the phrase "Stones which are alive but possess dame are said to be in seki." can be concluded to mean:
A stone possesses dame if any stone in the same group (not chain) is adjacent to a dame.
A stone possesses dame if any stone in the same group (not chain) is adjacent to a dame.
