Just curious...

In tournaments there are people who sits and record a game.

Do these people record the game from their perspective? Or from the perspective of a particular player? Black? White?

Hi sclim,

Traditionally, Black's.
( But AlphaGo has dispensed with a few "traditions". :) )

If a pro is the recorder, they'll try to record it from B's POV,
regardless of where the pro is situated.
For others, it varies, depending on a few factors.

( In chess, it's unambiguous.
In Go, one nice thing about this B-POV tradition is
then we know what the board looked like to each player during the game. )

Do you mean the people you see at amateur tournaments recording on an iPad while they play?

For example, the girl with the laptop would be recording the game from Black's perspective instead of the recorder's perspective, correct?

@sclim In that case, yes. Of course with software recording it is easy to rotate the SGF after the game, but if it is being broadcast live, black's perspective is standard.

Also, nice photo. The player on the right is Hei Jiajia / Joanne Missingham.

And traditionally, black always places their first move in the upper right corner.

but once I was recording a game, and black played their first move in their lower left corner, so it looked like I was recording the game upside down.
