Is there any open data source that lets you check how many people were promoted to dan in a given country in a given year?
The EGD doesn't cover any of the early years.

Did something unusual happen in 1978?
Also, accompanying graphs for the total BGA membership and new members per year may be informative, side by side with the graph in post#1.

From http://britgo.org/history/bgahist.html

Quote:
The first London Open was held in 1975 at Imperial College. In March the same year a permanent home for this and other Go events in London became available in the shape of the London Go Centre. This centre was opened with generous sponsorship thanks to the efforts of the great Iwamoto (9 dan), and was run until October 1978 by Stuart Dowsey and David Mitchell. It was a seven day a week centre for playing and teaching Go, a focus for Go publicity, and for the distribution of Go material. In the end it proved to be over-extended and was unable to attract enough members to be financially independent in the expensive London environment. During this period BGA membership was over 1000, boosted by the Go Centre, the Open Door television program on Go and a feature on Radio 4.

NB these are dan promotions so a person can be represented several times as they go up the grades (I'm the yellow block in 2013 and grey in 2010).

Don't get too exciting by the chart. On their own, I think Dan promotions don't tell you very much. The addition of number of first time tournament players, and yearly membership totals make a more useful data set.
I know that Finland has a dan promotion list. Does any other European country have a list?

Dutch dan promotions are decided by a classification commision. In the year books of the Dutch Go Associations, a dan list of about 130 players is published with the year of the last promotion for each player. So I suppose there are archives that the editors have access to.
