A query: is there any "motif" to the different houses of the Godokoro period? Both the Big Four and the minor ones. Martial arts ryuha, or artists, had techniques, artistic (leit)motifs... I'm not aware of that in Go, but...

Any ideas?

The 3 space pincer was associated with the Honinbo House. IIRC, the 2 space pincer was associated with the Yasui House, but I am not sure about that.

The Honinbo school was "famous" for banning the use of the 3-3 point as a corner opening, but for unknown reasons. This may have been connected with a newly discovered game where Katayama Chiteki played it on move 1 against Jowa. Whether it caused any kind of offence is not known, and Katayama was of the Yasui school, who were generally very pally with the Honinbos.

(But the game is very interesting anyway because it has quite a few features that can be regarded as glimmerings of AI go. It, and other new ones by Jowa, Dochi, Dosaku et al, will be in the new version of the GoGoD database currently being prepared by Anders Kierulf for a new edition of SmartGo with ~106,000 games).

Beyond that, it was very common for an heir to have a very different style from the head of the house, so I hardly think there was anything like Ferrari team orders (or Ferran orders in this case )
