I didn't really feel the sharpness in their reading. I think it's conceivable that they're 5d, but a move like 195 was definitely a signal to me that these two can't be pro.

i took little more time ...and you are correct.
#5 is better than #2.

now i am off work...
i look at it again..
#5 can not be professional some moves dont make sense.
#4 is definitly not it
but #2 look more solid.

Game #1 is clearly 14k, and Game 3 is 7k. I have no doubts about that.

Game #2 - Maybe I'm wrong, but moves like 18 and the quadruple kosumi hardly seem like the kind of moves pros play, so I don't think that game could possibly be pro.

Game #4 had a very impressive sequence in the top right, and the opening is something I have only seen in professional games.

Game #5 was also very impressive though, and the opening felt good (Gresil - both those moves you mentioned are joseki - you should learn them sometime ;-) ), so this game could also be professional.

So, that leaves game #2 being the 1d game.
I'm not sure at all between games 4 and 5, but until I read other's comments my intuition told me game four was pro, and game 5 5d, so I'll stick with that. Though, I do see topazg's point that a pro would likely avoid being squeezed like black was in the top left corner of game four.

Without looking at anyone else's answers:
1 - 14k
2 - pro
3 - 7k
4 - 1d
5 - 5d

Oh dear, I hope I'm not too far off.

1=7k

2=1d

3=14k

4=5d

5=pro

time to look at everyone elses comments...

I have to say though, telling between a 1d 5d and pro is pretty tough when all of them are at least several stones stronger than me. When people are playing moves above your level, it's hard to understand them.

4 was off by a mile for some reason

Next time I'll spend some time on this :evil:

In retrospect, I probably should have taken a clue from the big dumpling black made in game 4.

Next time you do this, it would be interesting to do one with a 1d, 3d, 5d, 7d, and pro game, and one with a 13k, 10k, 7k, 4k and 1k game. I bet you have to be several dan to do very well on the first one, and I'm curious if the second one would be judged better by 5ks than by 1d+s (I think no but am not sure).

I got it right... but for the wrong reason!

I just recounted #5's endgame being more (?) awake this time and I think I forgot to give white komi the other night when I was judging the position - it's actually about a ten point difference (either that or I'm less awake tonight and misjudging some other way.)

So in all fairness, I have to demote myself to honorable mention. :oops:

Interesting.

I found the game close to my strength.

I switched the pro and 5d games - they are too much stronger than me for me to tell the difference.

I switched the 7k and 14k games - they are too much weaker than me for me to tell the difference.

I wonder if high dans or pros would be unable to distinguish my games from a 7k?

I'm not sure, I felt very confident about all 5 having played through them twice. Maybe the difference is perhaps less whether it is close to one's own rank, and more to do with how often you look at games of the ranks in question.

I teach people at the 7 and the 14k range, I am around 1d, and I play through a lot of professional games - I feel like this probably makes the job much easier than if, for example, I just played a number of even games at my own rank and did little else.

Hmmmm when I play a new player at the goclub I'm not able to say if he is at 20k, 15k or 10k ....

I think because araban gave some ranks to choose (which were very far apart from each other) it was kind of easy to guess the right rank. If I should've guessed without multiplechoice, I think I'd have screwed up completly.

Yeah, that's true, I think I would have too...

Maybe that's the next test araban, don't tell anyone what ranks they are? 10 points for getting spot on, -1 per rank off to a minimum of 0?

I liked the examples of weird games played by pros, that looks like DDK games, in a similar thread on GD. What were they ?
