I've been using my iPad to study games, with SmartGo Kifu, and have found a great pleasure in going through books with commented games. What I do is load the games on the iPad - if they're not in the SmartGo Kifu database, I get them from GoGoD - then read through the books, playing through the games and reading comments. While I really like playing through games on my board, this is very time consuming, and using the iPad for this is a real boon. What I do is go through them once on the iPad, then read the book comments and play through them again as I read.

I'm currently going through the 1971 Honinbo book, and will soon start going through Invincible, adding the variations myself. Then I'll play the games through on my board too, or at least the most interesting ones.

I've been doing the same thing, only I play them by hand rather than loading a game and stepping through it. I find I understand a game better if I have to actually make the moves with my fingers. Previously I did this on a PC, and the iPad is much nicer for it.

I can't quite convince myself that an ipad is worth the price. I've already got an ipod touch, and I don't think I'd be gaining enough to justify spending that much money on a new device.

Well, if you can see the iPod touch screen well enough, it may be fine for you. I find it too small, in part because my eyesight isn't great. And the iPad is good for other things, such as reading books and a variety of apps.

So, someone posts that they do the same thing on an iPod Touch and you respond amiably. Then someone posts that they do the same thing on an Android and you respond snarkily?

Come on.

I clearly pointed out that the iPod touch screen is too small for me. You're the snarky one here.

We are all biased, I have no problem with that as being a normal human attribute. But you show your bias and then deny that you have a bias. I believe that is what is the fundamental issue that brings the reactions.

No, oren said he could do the same thing with Android. As far as I know, Android is an OS not a device, and there are no such devices that have large screens yet. I specifically pointed out that the iPod touch screen is too small for me. So his Android whatever is obviously too small too. (BTW, I find it interesting that, in pretty much every discussion about handhelds, people say "Android" rather than the name of the device...)

Also, one of the main attractions of the iPad for go is SmartGo Kifu, which really does everything right. It's a brilliant program, and, while I don't know if there's an equivalent program for Android, I would tend to doubt that it's as good.

iPad does seem quite good for go related stuff, alas I can't afford one right now :(

Is it possible to take some pics of the iPad in action? Also, is there sound when you place a stone on the SmartGo Kifu?

I can only speak for myself, but I think chocolate ice cream tastes so much better than vanilla or strawberry. But speaking for everyone else, if you prefer vanilla or strawberry ice cream over chocolate, it just shows you have no taste.

There are a couple of screen shots here:

http://www.smartgo.com/en/kifu.htm

If there's anything specific you're interested in seeing, I can take screen shots and post them.

It doesn't make sounds when you place stones; that's a good idea, though - I'll suggest it to the developer.

Kirk, I was responding to Jordus, since he brought up similar devices.

That's about all I'll say on the matter since it was killed on GD unless you want to discuss methods of studying Go on portable devices. The Ipad is just one of many.
