Go schools in China?

For a long time now, I've been looking for a Baduk school to go to in Asia. I studied at KBC, which was almost free, but it has closed down, unfortunately. I need to work a job no matter where I want to go, but I'm looking for a school that's both affordable, and extremely serious. What I want most is to be in those schools where kids learn go all day long in a serious environment, or better yet, an Insei program, bet let's not get ahead of things.

Are schools in China cheaper?

I've done a lot of google searching (not for schools in China, I need somone who can read Chinese to do that, as the translation is not good and I can't seem to find any crucial information myself)

I know about Baduk World, but I could never afford it. I know about Yoo Chang'hyuk's school, but I don't know how much it costs or anything.

Aren't there any schools in China like these, but cheaper?

Keep in mind my level - I've been dedicating my life to Go as much as I can, and my aim is pro level, be it strength or actual status...

I've been considering Myongji U Baduk, but I don't know...

Even in the link that was sent that tells me all the costs of studying there (and it probably doesn't focus on strength like a Dojang would) I still don't know how much it would cost, because I don't know if the total costs they show take into account the 70% foreigner scholarship or not. I don't know the grand total costs.

I wonder if OSAP (student loans) would cover Myongji U!

Is anyone who can read Chinese up to the challenge of digging out Chinese Go schools for us??

Calculated in Euro for myself and IBA is 3000€ cheaper than this for twelve months though. The other chinese weiqi study offers are only short term. The best option in China really is Guo Juan's school, which I intend to visit one of these summers.

I still think that those are the schools actively advertised to foreigners, but that there are many more that simple aren't on the internet, or are and are completely in Chinese. I think many of those schools might accept foreigners upon random request.

I remember a posting by someone on GD that had been studying in china, teaching english to make a living, and I don't think he was spending much. You might try to find that thread for more info.

I don't know how much cheaper you can get than Guo Juan's school. But if you are looking for schools that are not advertised to Westerners, then you will have to talk to a local.

Li Tianzhu is a Chinese 1p who teaches at an after-school go school in Shanghai. The students 'graduate' at 6d, so it is not what you are looking for, but perhaps she can tell you where they graduate to. Being a 1p herself, she would know the options for professional preparation.

She is quite nice and her English is very good. Her names on KGS are echoli and echoli2008.

It's true. For me it will be cheaper staying two months in China playing Go than to come up for my actual life, studying in a foreign country - in a direct comparison. Of course my rent won't pay itself while I'm abroad... ^^

According to this post (http://www.nwpwq.com/onews.asp?id=913), the fee schedule of Nie Weiping Weiqi Daochang (dojo) for 2010 goes like 24000 yuan ($3500+) a year, including tuition and boarding. It caters to kids (most of them under 16 I'd say).

Yeah, when going with Guo Juan, it's explicit asked to visit a chinese course before studying in China.

None, that are publicised actively if.

The only other way I know than that school is convincing Chizuru Kobayashi-sensei to help to you become insei but that is not really cheap.

For now, since my new job starts tomorrow, I'll work towards saving u for Guo Juan's Go in China thing.

Does anyone who the strength limit of who would receive great benefit from studying there? It's probably a silly question, but, as I am 5 Dan right now (KGS + Canada rank, different in other places I'm sure), I think I will be easily 6 Dan by the time I go (should not take more than 8-12 months to save up). Right now I'm in Canadian league and KGS Insei league, play Go in-person Mondays and Fridays (both times, there is one 6-Dan to play), study problems and stuff myself when I have time, and will be paying for pro lessons online once I'm settled into my job.

So anyhow, Would a 6-Dan benefit a lot there, or should I go somewhere else? The price seems quite reasonable for this one.

I have no idea how I will balance out everything in my schedule... I should learn Chinese, so I probably need to do a class... I will be busy all the time.

Adoreme - I don't see how I'll be able to continue the league we were doing in WBaduk, is Kim-sabomnim still doing it?

Well the main teacher is a 7p, and I'm pretty sure someone of your level can "receive great benefit" from a 7p. The 7p, An Yan, also runs a Go school which has teachers who range from Chinese 5d (a lot stronger than KGS 5d) to pro level, so you will have more than enough company of stronger players to learn from. The school is also organized into groups for students, of which the highest is 4d and above which you can enter.

Yeah, I guess it's pretty unlikely that it wouldn't be good. I thought even though there's a pro teacher, the program might no be aimed at certain levels. Agreed, KGS 5d is so weak.
