When this game in the 1961 NHK Cup was first counted it came out as a win for Black by 0.5 point, but Kitani (White) challenged this. The game was replayed several times by the commentator Hasegawa Akira 7d, announcer Honda Sachiko 3d and scorekeeper Sakaguchi Haruyasu 3d, and each time it came out as a White victory. Hashimoto eventually accepted the loss.

The time limits were just 25 minute each. We can infer that Kitani at least had nevertheless counted accurately at least during the game. Rather than say that we could likewise infer that Hashimoto did not count accurately, we need to recall that this was still in the days when rivalry between the Nihon Ki-in and Hashimoto's fledgling Kansai Ki-in was at its height, so he couldn't be expected to roll over easily.

White's tesuji at 14 is one of those things you see very often in books but not so often in play.
