I'd like to combine two of my favorite hobbies.

They seem to mesh rather well: scuba requires lots of down time to offgas between dives, which is well suited for playing go.

I'm thinking of some of us either getting rooms in the same hotel, or reserving cabins on the same live-aboard boat. We could dive during the day and play go in the evenings. Even better than that, many top dive sites are around the south China sea, where we might be able to find some strong players among the locals.

Anyone else?

Sounds idyllic. Sadly I haven't been diving in a decade and probably won't get back into it anytime soon - hard enough to get my partner to snorkel.

I'm in. Sweet plan.

Timing is starting to be a thing with me, but if we plan ahead ...

Are you a "admire, respect and photograph" diver or a "admire, respect, gather and eat" diver? I've only been a few times and, though a devoted greenie in most regards, I gather and eat seafood a lot.

I'm disappointed. I thought you meant something like this.

Sorry, but no. As demonstrated below, stingrays seem to want to check out anything new on the ocean floor:

...and that is with chess pieces, which are shaped nothing like the clams and scallops that the ray is looking for. Just imagine several hundred small stones - which are the right shape. :o

So I think we'll play go on land.

I don't dive, but this is a really inspired idea. Not sure if any of my hobbies are suited for combined excursions.

This sounds like it would be a blast. All I have to do now is learn to scuba. How long does it take to reach shodan, and does go experience carry over? :D

The life and death part does.

Learn how not to die, and how not to get your buddy killed, and it is easy. ;-)

Palapiku, how did you get the board to not float away? Did you glue it to the tiles or something?

I'm a "take only photos and leave only bubbles" type of diver. Unless it is tasty and slower than me. And not endangered.

You could use your oxygen tank while you play go, I have heard of some players doing that to try to get an edge. I think it probably has to do with the toxic air in some countries more than getting oxygen to the brain though.

I did manage to convince my wife to do a diving trip per year (going to Bonaire with about 100 people from another forum in a week :) ) but I never managed to to convince her to play go.

However, Maybe I should bring my silicone goban to Bonaire. Maybe one of the Americans will know how to play. I'll think about asking in the other forum. (or maybe setting up a goban avatar and wait for someone to ask about it).

I don't eat or hunt sharks, I will say. Spiny lobster or sheephead was more what I was talking about.

I haven't had a diving holiday yet this year, so I'm in.

(I've never taken anything to eat from any my dives. A fish has eaten me, though.)

The L19 scuba club had its first meeting yesterday. It was on dry land, in Santa Monica, California.

Short term plans are to dive locally, probably someplace between Redondo Beach and Ventura.

Long term, long distance plans were not discussed much due to a shortage of time.

Joaz, do your Termagants swim, or did you leave then in the Vale?

They used 3XL BCDs and double 130cf tanks. Still haven't found face masks for them yet, so we just use duct tape.
