We're very happy to collaborate with EGF professional Mateusz Surma 2p during the Dutch Online Go Competition (Nederlandse Internet Go Competitie or NiGC for short). We will be randomly picking a game from the previous round of the competition and Mateusz will review it. The playing field is broad, ranging from beginners (25k) to former and current Dutch champions (6d), so expect a wide array of reviews. I will be updating this post with the videos every week and announcing them in a reply down below.

If you're interested in the background of this competition, I've written an extensive post about it here.

Videos

  1. Filip Vanderstappen (5d) vs Rob van Zeijst (6d)
  2. Marcel Riedeman (6k) vs Wil Schraven (5k)
  3. Bart Caers (10k) vs Sander Polling (9k)
  4. Ger de Groot (1d) vs Roel Van Nyen (2k)
  5. Rob Friederichs (5k) vs Joost Winter (7k)
  6. Maximilliano Ciaffi (9k) vs Julian Gonggrijp (12k)
  7. Martin Bierbooms (1d) vs Frank Filius (1k)

New video by Mateusz Surma 2p (see video 2 in the first post). This time he's reviewing an SDK game from the competition. I really like this video, because it goes into a lot of fundamentals, so it's useful for all levels.

Those are some very insightful, thorough but concise reviews! Mateusz Surma does a really good job - good advertisment : )

In the second game, I'm interested in Black's better option instead of the kosumi ('a'), though.

Hello,
Thank you everyone for kind words :-)

@SoDesuNe
I forgot about speaking anything in the video about where to play for black in that position.
Basically, the move, which black played in the game (J16) is ok.
Just, before playing this move, in my opinion, it would be quite important to exchange E17 for F16 (not to let white enter the corner that easily).

Btw. In your 1st diagram white probably will not play at G17 (it's some kind of extended empty triangle).
Instead, I would recommend playing at H18 - white is not that heavy anymore.

I feel like white would not be very overconcentrated.
White has a three-space jump K17 - O17. This jump usually leaves some weakness (possible invasion in the middle). However, with a strong group around, it'd be anyway difficult to invade.
If there was a two-space jump, then it would be probably overconcentrated (invasion anyway not possible, so white's strong group doesn't give him that profit of securing an invasion).

In your 2nd diagram - that one looks playable for black (black secures the corner and the invasion at M17 remains).

Regards,
Mateusz

My 2¢. For one thing, as we have known for a few years now, :w6: should be at b. More importantly, if you want to utilize the aji of that Black stone, isn't :b7: better at c?

If you are going to kick in the top left, isn't this the time? After :w2:, :b3: is a nice pincer. :)

Yes, it should be better.

In my opinion black can play any move at the top (move 3 in your diagram), doesn't really matter where exactly.
Just not to let two white stones create a nice extension.
If playing closer to these stones, white has less space to create potential life with those two stones. But white can play from the other side (e.g. at K17) and can consider sacrificing.
If playing further from these stones, white has more space to create potential life with those two stones. In this case, if playing tenuki (Q17 looks quite big), it's more difficult to attack those two stones.

This time Mateusz created a video review of a DDK game from the competition (see video 3 in the first post). It's a bit longer than the previous ones and full of comprehensive basics that I personally learned a lot from. Enjoy! :D

I've added another one of Mateusz videos to the first post of this thread (video 6). It's a review of a game between a 9 kyu and a 12 kyu. I hope you'll enjoy it! :D

Mateusz has released his last video review for this competition (video 7 in the first post above).

I'd like to thank Mateusz Surma for his excellent lessons and I can recommend everyone to have a look at them :D
