according to Sina, this game is tied at 53 moves for a game in an international tournament, although the other game was only a prelim game, and not in the main round. One of the guys misread a ladder and resigned.

Maybe they didn't know about this one, or discounted it being blitz.
Howevever, when I check go4go it has what I presume is that game with 129 moves! "[1991-08-30] 3rd Asian TV Cup, final Takemiya Masaki 9p (Black) vs. Cao Dayuan 9p (White) B+R (5.5 komi)": http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/7973

Yeah, I don't know what's up with that, but I don't think they count the Asian TV cup. Only the "big" international tournaments.

I had to check his name on Sensei's Library, turns out he was doing the count-down in the NHK cup not so long ago (and was 2-3 dan I guess). I remember seeing him playing in the said tournament a couple of months ago and wondering how he got 7-dan so quick :)

A rising star: finished top of the Honinbo league with 6-1 and started the Honinbo title match vs Iyama today.

4th round was a few days ago, and 5th today. Winners in bold.

4th round:
Zhou Ruiyang vs. Shin Jiseo
Ke Jie vs. Lian Xiao
Tan Xiao vs. Li Zhe
Shi Yue vs. Peng Liyao

Li and Peng winning were both upsets, but not huge ones (#47 beats #10 and #33 beat #14 from goratings). Li is an interesting player in that he went to university as well as being a pro with a rather unconventional style (and wrote some interesting posts on AlphaGo that were translated to English). Zhou played some Master-esque moves: viewtopic.php?p=219067#p219067. Ke's play was interesting too making a giant seki.

5th round
Ke Jie vs Li Zhe
Zhou Ruiyang vs Peng Liyao
Edit: xiayun says best of 3 so above only 1st game.

We seem to have duplicate threads on this (due to character encoding problems?): viewtopic.php?p=219126#p219126

No wonder Zhou Ruiyang has a nickname 'Alpha Goat' (Goat = Yang in Chinese) ;-)

5th round 2nd game:

Ke Jie beat Li Zhe by 2.5
Peng Liyao beat Zhou Ruiyang by resign

So Ke Jie straight through to final, Peng vs Zhou decider in a day or two.

Zhou played more Master-style moves with the avoiding avalanche joseki like vs Jiang Weijie that Redmond commented but Peng played one not 2 space high pincer when approached.

3rd game is live now with more Master style from Zhou in that he played press after low approach to 3-4 and distant pincer and then tenukid twice. One stone (:b17:) of his resulting group ended up looking misplaced though so I feel it's not so good, I wonder how Master handled similar situations. Or maybe Master wouldn't tenuki so much because white already reinforced the 4-4 behind the pincer (:w6: in 1st diagram) so counter pincer is less effective. I can't yet recall a Master game where it defended the press group following the attack at 14 from the corner (there was #33 vs Gu Li where it was attacked from outside and played push instead of dame connect).

The marked stone below isn't totally useless as it all but stops the peep at a which could be a nice sente for white and help his side group come out, means black can deal with the white double hane b-d, and is also a vital point for building eyes (and indeed Zhou did later allow that group to get cut off and live inside with an eye there), but I can't help feel it would be better placed at e or somewhere else.

No ;-)

The third game, and might be the final one, is this Saturday, December 23.

Ke Jie won the second game as well. He took all 4 corners and then lived with a big group in the centre using some nice counterattack against the surroundings.

Peng had much better chance yesterday comparing to the first game, but didn't handle it well after white crosscut in the middle. With Ke Jie holding white in Game 3, the chance is pretty high that the final will be over tomorrow.

Probably because that game had practically no middlegame and that's where Ke's greatest difference in strength lies. It was basically play some joseki on a side, play two 3-3 invasions, resolve a ladder, one side invasion jumps out to safety and now >200 moves of endgame.

Peng won the 4th game by half a point as well so it goes to a deciding fifth game tomorrow. Ke is white tomorrow, but could he let this title slip from his grasp?
