There should also be one wildcard for the seeded player(it was Gu Li last year), but not sure who the person is since I'm finding all the top remaining players in the preliminary brackets.

Ke Jie is the two-time defending champion here. Lee Chang-ho was the only one to manage three-repeat, while Lee Sedol holds the most titles with 4.

I have no idea. The wild card may not be selected yet. Sometimes the sponsors announce it after the prelims.

Edit: cyberoro.com says the wild card this year will be determined after the prelims.

The prelims draw in English is now up on Mr Kin's site: https://k2ss.info/igo/wr/sc/. I noticed Mariya Zakharchenko the not-so-well-known Ukrainian girl who turned pro won her first game, and that Kim Seungjun, my teacher from BIBA, is playing Wang Haoyang 6d, the Zen Killer from MLily cup.

Sina.com keeps stats of Chinese players. Out of 32 Chinese players, 2 forfeited, 3 lost to other Chinese players, 1 lost to Japanese player (Ma Yichao lost to Mutsuura Yuta), 2 lost to Korean players (both in female groups), 24 advanced.

Yes! But he is seeded in the main tournament so we will not see him playing until September.

Glad to see Iyama on the list. However, I can't see other promising Japanese names in the prelim (e.g Ichikiri, Kyo Kagen, or even Kono Rin).

The second round is finished for Group A-G, Senior Groups and Women's Groups. There are no major upsets. Kim Jiseok, Kang Dongyun, Lian Xiao, Gu Li, Fan Tingyu, Choi Cheolhan, Jiang Weijie, Yu Zhiying, Choi Jeong all through to the final 8 of their group. Group H-N will play second round today. Group Q (World group) will also play first round today and we will see Ryan Li, Artem Kachanovskyi in action.

Unfortunately so far no Japanese players has passed second round except for two players in the senior groups. Ida Atsushi 8p might be the best bet today against Korean 1p Kim Namhoon. Ukraine's Mariya Zakharchenko lost to Pan Yang 2p, who plays for Team Zhejiang in Women's A-League. Mutsuura Yuta, yesterday's winner over Ma Yichao, ran into world champion Fan Tingyu and could not continue the winning trend.

Yeah, I'm surprised to see no Shibano Toramaru, as he seems to be venturing abroad (e.g. Chinese B league) and is a promising young player. Young female title-holder Fujisawa Rina is out already against some non-famous Korean 1d. Takemiya Yoko (famous for being Takemiya Masaki's son and the first pro to lose to a publicly available program (Zen) on 2 stones) is out too: he made a big wall like his Dad but his Korean opponent easily reduced it. Komatsu Hideki 9d won his 1st game in the senior group. Ida Atsushi 8d is there but his rising star has waned recently, as is So Yokoku 9d (famous for centre openings recently) who won his first game.

Part of the reason might be the lack of participating fees in the prelims of Korean open tournaments. Every year there are quite a few players (mostly Korean players) forfeit in the prelims too (7 in the first round this year).

Unfortunately Blackie (Kim Seungjun 9p) lost to Wang Haoyang 6p. After an AlphaGo shimari he went for a big central moyo and things seemed to be going okay until Wang's group he was attacking ended up killing his wall (I think he could have safely captured the tail but misread and tried to kill all of it). That game and the others were recorded for broadcast by the visiting BIBA troupe as the scheduled game recorders didn't turn up. Youngster Shin Minjun 5p beat legend Lee Changho 9p with 3-3 on move 6, Shi Yue 9p beat Yun ChanHee 7p (who also played AG-style early 3-3 and then wedge the side, living giving Shi thickness which made for hard fighting on the other side of the board where he died, and Hu Yaoyu 8p beat Hong Minpyo 9p in a more traditional game.

Photo of review (Blackie on left) at https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =3&theater

And in the world group Ryan Li couldn't follow up on his impressive win against Chen Yaoye and lost against Victor Chow 7d of South Africa.

I found Won Seongjin's game against Wu Guanga rather interesting. Won is known for normally playing a thick and influence-oriented style with a powerful punch but in this game he (playing white) made territories and Wu had centre-potential (though I suppose you could say his territories were thick and thus he was able to freely start centre activities). A few highlights:
Wu plays Master-style (game #31 vs Li Qincheng) shoulder hit, but Won crawls on 3rd line rather than pushing up which seemed to lead to bad result for Li

His centre group then died (planned sacrifice I presume, seems pretty big, but maybe no other choice) but he got some territory on the left side and then turned to attacking black's upper right group. I thought Won was losing now. Taking liberties isn't sente in the semeai yet as his group only has 4, but it does means white can't easily cut around a so his scraps of stones there are more connected than they look (but what about b?).

Black settled part of it, white got the 2 stones and the top and settled centre bits and then black played 2 (with some time-tesujis omitted) to prevent white capturing the marked cutting stone so attack the 4 white stones on the right side. Given the game continuation I wondered if black could have been less greedy and won with simply playing something like extension at a and allow white to net at b (though maybe white would try to live more efficiently e.g. c) and win on territory without further fighting.

The second round is in the books for all groups. Of the 152 players left, 54 are from China, 4 from Chinese Taipei, 2 from Japan (both in the senior group), 84 from Korea, and 8 from the world group. For Japanese players in the open groups I thought Ida Atsushi 8p had the best chance to advance but he lost to Kim Namhoon 1p.

Uberdude posted earlier that Ryan Li lost to Victor Chow of South Africa in the world group. Here is the match up for next round:

Victor Chow vs Ali Jabarin
Eric Lui vs Pavol Lisy
Nuttakrit vs Gansheng Shi
Artem Kachanovskyi vs Mateusz Surma

There are several family affairs going on in these prelims. The father-daughter 3-some of Kim Seongrae, Kim Cheayoung, Kim Dayoung all advanced to next round. They will play Paek Seongho, Gao Xing and Li He respectively. The Korean father-son combo Choi Kyubyeong and Choi Youngchan also both advanced. The Japanese father-son pair not so lucky. Dad Komatsu Hideki won both rounds but the son Komatsu Daiki lost in the first round.

Round 3 will be played tomorrow July 1st.

Komatsu Hideki continues to win today, by a big margin. It seems that he is always a strong contender for the senior group over the past few years! Both Yu Bin and Seo Bongsoo are not in his group, so IMO he could be the favourite to qualify for his group.

Third round is done. Biggest upset is probably Mi Yuting's loss to Hwang Jaeyeon 4p. Newly minted Chunlan Cup champion Tan Xiao also lost to Xue Guanhua 2p. Another world champion Jiang Weijie lost too, but maybe not as surprisingly, because his opponent is 17 year old Zhao Chenyu 5p, who is quite comfortable facing world champions. Zhao 5p plays for Team Jiangsu in the A-League. After beating world champion Shi Yue in the first round of A-League this year, he was promoted to captain's position, and promptly beat Ke Jie and Zhou Ruiyang in the next two rounds. It will be interesting to see how far he can go in this tournament.

In the world group, after beating AGA pro Ryan Li Victor Chow beat European pro Ali Jabarin. Eric Lui beat Pavol Lisy. Nuttakrit lost to Gansheng Shi, Artem Kachanovskyi lost to Mateusz Surma. Chow will play Lui, Shi will play Surma in the semi-final of Group Q.

After 3 rounds, the count for the big 4 Go Associations is as follows: China 29, Korea 40, Japan 2, Chinese Taipei 1. All 14 amateurs are out (there were 3 left in round 3).

There is no rest day. The group semi-final round will be played on July 2nd. Interesting match ups include Lian Xiao vs Kang Dongyun and Dang Yifei vs Weon Seongjin.

Yes I think he has a good chance too. He will play Kim Kihun next. Yu Bin lost to Oya Koichi in Group O so Japan could have two qualifiers.

Of the 3 players in the Kim family, dad and big sis won, little sis Kim Dayoung lost to Li He 5p. Next round will bring some tough tests for the Kim family. Kim Seongrae will play Seo Bongsoo, Kim Cheayoung will play China's top female player Yu Zhiying. In the Choi family dad won but son lost.
