Han Yizhou took the ko without playing a ko threat and was penalised by forfeiting his turn at move 35, (losing a ko worth over 40 points ...)

Interesting. Is having to pass your turn, but not forfeit the game, part of the Chinese rules (or the rules of this tournament) or did the referees have to improvise?
If I remember correctly Cho Chikun in Japan had to forfeit the game when he did that a few years ago.

Edit. Turns out I misremembered. It was in the 1980 Meijin and even if he had taken the ko without making a threat first, he had first asked the recorder if it was his turn to take the ko and had been answered that it indeed was. Normally taking without making a threat first would have meant forfeiting the game but since asking the recorder this kind of information was an established custom, things became more complex and the game was declared a draw.

I did something similar at the British open a couple of years ago: I played an illegal suicide move (I thought it was just self atari) as a ko threat during a huge ko. According to the BGA rules my move was removed and replaced with a pass and I said I would resign, but my opponent didn't want to win like that so graciously also passed and we continued the game, and in the end I managed to win. Very sporting of him I thought.

Not in BGA rules, after 2 passes you agree on the life and death status of the groups, we didn't, so play resumed. And also I think I was white and white should pass last before counting so it would need 3 passes.
