It’s kind of weird to have a Nongshim Cup that misses the top 2 players in the world.

It is possible to just invite the X top-rated players to each event and get rid of the preliminary tournaments. But if we did that, we would also get rid of the majority of the data that underlies those ratings.

Fan Tingyu beat Choi Cheolhan by resign. According to FineArt on Fox Fan had a sizeable lead from fairly early but Choi managed to make a comeback to almost even in late-middlegame but still lost in the end.

I feel bad for Lee Sedol: I was expecting him to lose as even when at his peak some years ago Fan had a 5-2 head-to-head record and Fan is at his peak rating now after his early success at the 2012 Ing cup aged 16 whilst Lee is rather over the hill, but that was an absolute spanking. Lee's group was in trouble by move 66, locally dead soon after and tried to capture the surrounding white group but that was impossible with such a loose net and it was game over by move 100, and to add insult to injury Fan lived in sente with both the surrounding group for the first kill and then a 2nd group which stopped Lee profiting that much from the surrounding. Here's the game with LZ 191 analysis.

Japan: 2.2%
Korea: 7.4%
China: 90.4%

Fan Tingyu now has a 16% chance of running the table.

Interesting that Lee Sedol played the same sequence as Leela in your recent Fox match (viewtopic.php?p=239178#p239178) up to move 7. She continued to push rather than jump. I obviously have a limited perspective, but it seemed like that jump proved to be an important defect!

Actually, that game you linked I was using Elfv1, but yes the jump leaves a defect which the bots often say black should repair with kosumi soon in preference to answering a 4-4 approach. In fact using LZ #191 it wants to push too, but gives the jump slightly higher winrate so I played that in a few Fox games. The lower right wasn't Lee's 3-4, but here you can see an example of the bot proverb "play a locally important corner move is more important than answering 4-4 approach". LZ agrees with all white's fuseki moves too, I think he was using a bot too (played another game with him and he did typical bot sente nonsense to resign). For Lee's game LZ doesn't like his one point jump to q14 and prefers first q5 or r4 and then the b7 defence.

Fan Tingyu bt. Ichiriki Ryo in the 8th game of the Nongshim Cup, his 7th consecutive wins this year, making him one of the most successful players in Nongshim history. This is his 17th win (only 3 loss) in total in this tournament, only 2 short from the record 19 wins set by Lee Changho.

I presume Fan has played in the Nongshim cup fewer times than Lee Changho, so his average wins per event is probably higher (but also starting earlier he probably has easier games than an 'iron goalkeeper', plus Lee Changho often won the final game so ran out of opponents to beat). This year is very similar to 2 years ago, then it was Ichiriki instead of Shibano who got the first win for Japan vs Korea (vs Lee Sedol rather than Ahn Kukhyun (who isn't a super-big name but has good form recently getting to the final of Samsung cup)), then Fan gets 7 wins and faces Park Junghwan. 2 years ago Park beat Fan, but this year I fancy Fan: since that last Nongshim cup game they've played twice, including in LG cup just 2 weeks ago and Fan won both of those. If Park wins then next year he plays Iyama (won last time) and then has to beat the remaining 4 Chinese players to win (lost to the first one, Fan Yunruo last time).
