And he gets to play the amateur Baek Hyunwoo next, so a great chance at advancing to the Sweet 16! On one hand, it sucks to see Ke Jie and Shi Yue having to face each other in the next round, but on the other hand, I do like how no redraw in the second round could present opportunity like this for Ilya.

About Ilya win, Katago think that during the first 100 move, it was quite balanced, then up to move 222, Lingtao get advantage multiple times but don't manage to keep it. Then white play 222, the losing move, and Ilya close the win soon after

Yes, Ilya was fortunate Yi made that mistake, but still it's really impressive to:
- keep the game close enough and not get smashed for so long so that if your opponent makes a mistake you can win
- make it complicated enough for a top 50 young Chinese pro to make a mistake
- seize the opportunity when he does
- hold onto the lead against his efforts to come back.

I seem to recall Ilya's win vs Wang Yuanjuan some years ago was a similar pattern.

Impressive result for Ilya. Congratulations!

I remember watching his games on KGS several years ago (Artem, too) - he's come a long way!

Mi Yuting showed he has studied his modern AI josekis and was FineArt 95% by move 39!

Ilya's game is at https://home.yikeweiqi.com/#/live/room/24031/1/22340180

Playing some modern joseki both players played near perfectly for the opening, now the fighting is starting. f7 instead of j7 was the vital shape point for white.

Looks like the turning point was the brilliant shortage of liberties combo he found with d2 and e5 around move 223.

Question: why does it figure as "B+R"? It looks to me like the endgame was played thoroughly.

Take care.

With Mi Yuting's result, I found it interesting that the bots didn't seem to think getting 3 stones in a row to atari a 4-4 was worth losing the top left without a squeeze. Compare game result in which top left is big black corner, d12 f13 b14 stones aren't connected and no forcing moves, white lost a bit extra at top h17 area, but q4 got atarid (LZ 226):

vs a 'minimize local loss rather than trade' sequence of black also getting corner, but not the extra around h17, white getting a squeeze so f13 etc aren't junk/light, and white getting 1 move on outside like c6 shimari (basically even on LZ 226):

Some of the round of 16 games are playing now, but Ke Vs Park still shows on Yike for tomorrow. Ichiriki Vs Ding, Mi Vs Byun, Xu Vs Tong underway. Odd schedule.

Mi Yuting beat Byun Sangil
Ichiriki Ryo beat Ding Hao. Not such a famous opponent but Ding is #10 on goratings now so very nice to see a Japanese player progressing. Ichiriki tried but failed to kill a group and had some cut bits on the outside when the group escaped, but ended up not dying with any of them and actually making a bunch of territory.
Xu Jiayang beat Tong Mengcheng.

Xu Jiayang, Ichiriki Ryo, and Byun Sangil are participating in the Okage Cup and need to leave early, so their matchups got moved up a day.

Today's results.
Ke Jie beat Park Junghwan, Ke kept up the pattern of white winning their games, and showed he hadn't lose sharpness from going to university (though I don't know how full or part time that is).
Xie Ke best Baek Hyunwoo
Meng Tailing beat Park Younghoon
Xie Erhao beat Kim Jiseok
Fan Tingyu beat Wang Wei

So 7 Chinese, 1 Japanese and no Koreans in the quarter finals!

It is full-time study, quite tough too. But that doesn't mean he has to do bad in professional competitions. As a good example, Jiang Weijie, who started at the same university few years ago, re-emerged much stronger this year.

That last round of games was interesting. Not only did the Chinese dominate, but almost all of the games were bloodbaths. Really fun go to watch!
